History
The General Dynamics Land Systems M1A2T Abrams is a Taiwan-specific export variant of the American M1A2 main battle tank. It was acquired to modernize the Republic of China Army's armored force and strengthen its ability to conduct mobile defensive operations.
Taiwan ordered 108 M1A2T tanks through the United States Foreign Military Sales program. The package also covered recovery vehicles, heavy equipment transporters, ammunition, communications equipment, training, spare parts, and technical and logistical support.
The M1A2T combines the established Abrams layout and 120 mm armament with export armor, modified electrical equipment, an auxiliary power system, and systems selected for Taiwanese requirements. Public descriptions differ over whether its configuration is most closely related to the M1A2 SEP v2 or SEPv3 standard.
Procurement and deliveries
On 8 July 2019, the United States Department of State approved a possible sale of 108 M1A2T tanks and related equipment to the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office. The estimated program value in the official DSCA notification was USD 2 billion. General Dynamics Land Systems was identified as the tank's prime contractor. Production and associated work were assigned to Anniston Army Depot in Alabama and the Joint Systems Manufacturing Center in Lima, Ohio.
Two early examples were reported delivered in 2022. Taiwan received its first full batch of 38 tanks in December 2024. According to the delivery plan reported by Janes, a further 42 tanks were scheduled for 2025 and the remaining 28 for 2026. Training, commissioning, and the formation of operational units followed the initial deliveries.
Design
The M1A2T retains the conventional Abrams arrangement. Its four-person crew consists of a commander, gunner, loader, and driver. The driver is positioned in the hull, while the other three crew members operate in the turret.
Protection and systems
The tank uses export-standard composite armor without the depleted-uranium armor fitted to some American Abrams variants. Published descriptions identify a reconfigured turret, modified electrical systems, and changes intended to satisfy Republic of China Army requirements. Exact protection levels and the detailed composition of the armor have not been disclosed.
The fire-control equipment provides a hunter-killer capability. This allows the commander to search for another target while the gunner engages the current target. The procurement package specified a Commander's Independent Thermal Viewer, an ammunition datalink, driver vision equipment, satellite navigation receivers, digital communications equipment, and the low-profile Common Remotely Operated Weapon Station.
An externally mounted auxiliary cooling and power system is installed on the left side of the turret bustle. It supplies electrical power and cooling without requiring continuous operation of the main turbine engine. This installation is one of the visible recognition features of the Taiwanese variant.
Powerplant and mobility
The M1A2T is powered by a Honeywell AGT1500-series multifuel gas-turbine engine rated at 1,500 hp. Power is transmitted through an X-1100 automatic transmission. The tank uses torsion-bar suspension and tracks for cross-country mobility.
The reported road speed is approximately 67 km/h, with a road operating range of about 426 km. The acquisition package included M1070A1 heavy equipment transporters and M1000 semi-trailers to support movement over longer distances and reduce wear on the tanks.
Armament
The primary weapon is the 120 mm M256 L/44 smoothbore gun. The ammunition datalink supports the use of compatible programmable ammunition. The approved package included kinetic-energy, high-explosive, canister, training, and dummy 120 mm rounds.
Secondary weapons include a 12.7 mm machine gun on the remotely operated weapon station, a coaxial 7.62 mm M240C machine gun, and another 7.62 mm M240 machine gun. Smoke grenade launchers provide rapid visual screening.
Operational history
After the first major delivery in December 2024, the Republic of China Army began inspection, training, commissioning, and unit integration. The tanks were assigned to formations responsible for the defense of northern Taiwan, where major government, industrial, transportation, and military facilities are concentrated.
During the Han Kuang No. 42 exercise in August 2026, M1A2T tanks deployed to Taoyuan International Airport for the first time. They operated with Yunpao wheeled armored vehicles in an exercise simulating the defense of the airport against an attempted seizure. The deployment demonstrated the use of heavy armor in the protection of critical infrastructure and in counterattacks against hostile forces that had reached an important transport hub.
