History

The Hanwha K239 Chunmoo is a South Korean wheeled multiple launch rocket system designed to fire several types of guided and unguided artillery rockets from interchangeable launch pods. The system was developed as a modern replacement for the older K136 Kooryong and combines an 8×8 launcher vehicle, computerized fire control, modular ammunition pods, and an associated ammunition support vehicle.

Development began in 2009 and was completed in 2013. Initial production started in August 2014. The system subsequently entered South Korean service and became an important export product, with Poland acquiring large numbers and additional procurement decisions or orders announced by Estonia, Norway, and Croatia.

South Korea initiated the program after its older K136 Kooryong system became increasingly inadequate against evolving North Korean long-range artillery threats. According to the K239 Chunmoo overview, the Defense Acquisition Program Administration spent KRW 131.4 billion on development and sought an automated fire-control system able to employ several ammunition types.

Initial production began in August 2014. Army Recognition reports that Chunmoo entered Republic of Korea Army service in 2014, while the Wikipedia account records the beginning of deployment in August 2015. By the end of 2016, launchers had also been deployed to Yeonpyeong and Baengnyeong islands, where Republic of Korea Marine Corps units are stationed.

Army Technology reports that South Korea ordered 58 systems in October 2014 and identifies the United Arab Emirates as another user. The modular launcher later attracted major European orders, particularly after Poland selected the system for a large-scale rocket artillery modernization program.

Poland signed a framework agreement with Hanwha Defense in October 2022 covering 288 K239 Chunmoo launchers. Polish launchers are integrated on locally manufactured Jelcz truck chassis and use Polish TOPAZ fire-control equipment, communications systems, and battlefield-management components.

By 2026, the European customer base had expanded further. Estonia ordered nine launchers, while Norway agreed to acquire 16 systems with associated ammunition. Croatia approved the purchase of 18 K239 Chunmoo launchers in a deal valued at €435.2 million. The Croatian systems are intended to replace Cold War-era Grad and Vulkan rocket launchers.

Design

Launcher vehicle

The standard South Korean K239 uses an 8×8 cross-country truck chassis. The vehicle is approximately 9 m long, 2.5 m wide, and 3 m high, with a combat weight of about 25 tonnes. Its armored forward cab accommodates a crew of three and provides protection against small-arms fire and artillery shell fragments. Nuclear, biological, and chemical protection is also provided.

The launcher assembly carries two interchangeable ammunition pods on a rotating mount. The two pods may contain different ammunition types, allowing a launcher to be configured for different fire missions without changing the basic vehicle. Hydraulic stabilizers are deployed before firing. The crew can control firing from within the protected cab, and external control is also described by Army Recognition.

Fire control

The K239 incorporates computerized fire control for indirect rocket artillery missions. Digital fire control and navigation reduce the time required to prepare a firing mission and support rapid displacement after firing. The Defense Post also describes Chunmoo as a modular system intended for networked targeting and rapid relocation after a fire mission.

Ammunition and modular pods

The launcher can carry two ammunition pods simultaneously. Six 239 mm guided rockets can be carried in each pod, giving a standard load of 12 such rockets. The 239 mm CGR-080 rocket is approximately 3.96 m long and uses GPS-aided inertial guidance. Available warhead descriptions include high-explosive configurations for personnel, structures, and hardened positions, as well as a cluster-warhead configuration.

Sources differ on the designation of the smaller legacy-compatible rocket. Army Technology and Army Recognition describe 130 mm ammunition, while the Wikipedia source identifies the K33 as a 131 mm rocket and states that Chunmoo does not use the older 130 mm K30, K37, and K38 rockets of the K136 Kooryong. The sources agree that Chunmoo is a multi-caliber system able to use modular pods containing different rocket types.

Army Technology also describes compatibility with 227 mm rockets, 239 mm guided rockets, longer-range 400 mm guided rockets, and a 600 mm ballistic missile configuration. The quoted ranges vary by munition: approximately 45 km for the described 227 mm unguided rocket, about 80 km for the 239 mm guided rocket, more than 200 km for the 400 mm guided weapon, and about 290 km for the 600 mm missile configuration.

For the 239 mm load, the system can launch six rockets in approximately 30 seconds and twelve rockets in about one minute. Two replacement launch pods can be loaded in approximately seven minutes according to the Wikipedia account, while Army Technology gives a broader reload interval of five to ten minutes.

Ammunition support vehicle

Each launcher is associated with a K239T ammunition support vehicle using the same basic truck chassis. The support vehicle carries four reload pods. This arrangement allows ammunition to be transported in sealed modular containers and transferred to the launcher without individually loading each rocket.

Mobility

The standard K239 launcher is powered by a 400 hp diesel engine. It has a reported maximum road speed of 90 km/h and a cruising range of approximately 800 km. The vehicle can negotiate a 60 percent gradient, a 30 percent side slope, a trench approximately 1.4 m wide, and water approximately 1.2 m deep. Run-flat tires, an anti-lock braking system, and a central tire-inflation system are also described for the South Korean chassis.

Export configurations and procurement

Poland's Chunmoo configuration differs from the standard South Korean launcher by integrating the launcher module with a Polish Jelcz truck chassis. Polish systems also incorporate TOPAZ automated fire control, Polish communications equipment, and locally integrated battlefield-management components. The 2022 framework agreement covered 288 launchers, followed by implementation agreements for an initial portion of the planned fleet.

Estonia subsequently ordered nine launchers. Norway selected Chunmoo for its next-generation long-range precision-fires requirement and agreed to purchase 16 systems with associated ammunition. Croatia approved 18 launchers in 2026 for €435.2 million, with the acquisition intended to replace its older Grad and Vulkan rocket artillery systems. These procurement programs should not be confused with confirmed operational service until deliveries and fielding occur.
