History

KMDB Pegas is a Ukrainian tracked infantry fighting vehicle under development by the Kharkiv Morozov Machine Building Design Bureau, a relocated Ukrainian state enterprise. The vehicle is intended to transport troops and provide direct fire support on roads and across difficult off-road terrain.

The Pegas project was publicly presented at the MSPO 2026 international defense exhibition in Kielce, Poland, in September 2026. Contemporary reports described the exhibited vehicle as a model or mock-up, while some accompanying captions referred to it as a prototype. No detailed timetable for prototype testing or serial production had been disclosed.

The project was reported by Defense Express, UNITED24 Media, UNN, and UA.NEWS. These reports consistently described Pegas as a 35-ton Ukrainian tracked IFV project with enhanced cross-country mobility, substantial ballistic protection, and a planned Ukrainian combat module.

Design

Pegas is designed as a tracked armored fighting vehicle with a declared combat weight of about 35 tonnes. The reported dimensions are 8 m in length, 3.2 m in width, and 3.3 m in height. The design is intended for movement on roads with different surfaces as well as cross-country terrain.

The declared maximum speed is 70 km/h and the stated range is 500 km. The vehicle is designed for operation at temperatures from −40 °C to +50 °C and at elevations up to 3,000 m above sea level.

Public information has not disclosed the troop-carrying capacity. The available reports also do not provide confirmed details of the powerplant or transmission fitted to Pegas.

Protection

The armored hull is planned to incorporate ballistic, mine, and fragmentation protection. The frontal projection is claimed to meet Level 6 of STANAG 4569, while the main part of the hull is intended to meet at least Level 4. Reporting on the project states that these levels correspond to protection against 30 mm fire from the front and 14.5 mm ammunition from other directions.

Additional protection against shaped-charge weapons, including RPG-7 grenades, is planned. The design is also expected to incorporate an electronic warfare system intended to counter unmanned aerial vehicles.

Armament

The planned principal weapon station is the BM Topaz combat module developed by KMDB. The developer's representative stated that Topaz is intended for installation on Pegas, while the combat module itself was still undergoing testing at the time of the MSPO 2026 presentation.

Reported planned armament for the Topaz-equipped configuration consists of a 30 mm cannon, a coaxial 7.62 mm machine gun, two anti-tank guided missiles, and a 30 mm automatic grenade launcher. Some reports noted that the module shown with the development vehicle resembled the BM-7 Parus, while the planned production configuration is expected to use the Topaz module.

Program status

As of September 2026, Pegas remained under development. No confirmed schedule for prototype trials, start of production, or service entry had been announced. Reports discussing the program stated that serial production would make Pegas a domestically developed Ukrainian tracked infantry fighting vehicle, while earlier Ukrainian concepts of this class had not progressed to mass production.
