Ukrainian Armor Saigak-1

History

The Ukrainian Armor Saigak-1 is a light armored vehicle developed in Ukraine on a Toyota Hilux-based chassis. It is intended to replace ordinary unprotected off-road vehicles used for routine military transport while providing ballistic and mine protection for five occupants.

Ukrainian Armor presented the Saigak-1 at the MSPO 2026 international defense exhibition in Kielce, Poland. Reports from the exhibition described the vehicle as suitable for personnel transport during combat operations, special missions, training and patrol duties, as well as operation on different types of terrain and in different seasons.

The vehicle combines a protected armored capsule with a four-wheel-drive pickup-derived platform. Its reported features include PZSA-3 ballistic protection, STANAG 4569 Level 1 mine protection, a 240 hp diesel engine, RunFlat tires and a maximum stated road speed of 140 km/h.

Earlier Saigak program

The Saigak name predates the armored Saigak-1. In 2021, Ukrainian Armor produced a prototype tactical off-road vehicle under the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine experimental design program named Saigak. According to Ukrainian Armor, the earlier vehicle was a militarized Toyota Hilux developed as a possible replacement for Soviet UAZ utility vehicles. It was produced in partnership with Glomex and was intended to participate in government trials.

Ukrainian Armor General Director Vladyslav Belbas stated in 2026 that the company reused the Saigak name from the earlier work on a universal pickup for the Ukrainian defense forces. He also said that protection requirements had become substantially higher, requiring the new vehicle to be redesigned and reinforced.

MSPO 2026 presentation

The armored Saigak-1 was publicly presented at MSPO 2026 alongside Ukrainian Armor's heavier Varta 3. Ukrainska Pravda reported that Ukrainian Armor described the Saigak-1 as a lightly armored vehicle for the rapid and protected movement of personnel. Oboronka reported the same basic protection, mobility and five-person capacity specifications.

According to a Ukrainian Armor statement cited by UNITED24 Media, the pickup-based Saigak-1 was intended to replace standard daily military transport with a more protected vehicle while retaining mobility and practical utility. The available reports from its 2026 presentation did not state that the Saigak-1 had entered serial production or operational service.

Design

Layout and protection

The Saigak-1 uses a Toyota Hilux-derived chassis with four-wheel drive. The chassis received a reinforced suspension to accommodate the additional mass of the armor. Its cabin is formed as a protected armored capsule, and the general internal arrangement was described as similar to Ukrainian Armor's Novator armored vehicle.

The vehicle accommodates five people. Sources describe this as two crew members and three additional personnel. The armored hull is rated to PZSA-3 ballistic protection. Reports from MSPO 2026 described this as broadly equivalent to STANAG 4569 Level 1 ballistic protection and capable of protecting against standard 5.45×39 mm and 7.62×39 mm projectiles.

The Saigak-1 is also reported to have STANAG 4569 Level 1 mine protection against anti-personnel mines and fragmentation. This protection level is separate from the PZSA-3 ballistic rating.

Powertrain and mobility

Power is provided by a 2.4-liter diesel engine rated at 240 hp. The source material states that the engine is coupled to a six-speed manual transmission. The reinforced suspension is intended to compensate for the higher vehicle mass created by the armored body.

The stated maximum speed is up to 140 km/h. An 80-liter fuel tank provides a reported maximum range of up to 600 km. Fuel consumption is stated as approximately 10 to 16 liters per 100 km, depending on operating conditions.

The vehicle uses 265/65 R17 wheels fitted with RunFlat inserts. These are intended to allow continued movement after tire damage.

Equipment

Safety and driver-assistance equipment includes front and rear cameras connected to a monitor. The vehicle is also equipped with communications and navigation systems.

Cabin equipment includes air conditioning and a heater. An automatic fire suppression system protects both the occupied compartment and the engine compartment.

Program status

The Saigak-1 was presented publicly as a new light armored vehicle at MSPO 2026. The available 2026 reports describe its intended missions and technical characteristics but do not confirm serial production, procurement quantities or entry into operational service.
