History

Koral is a Ukrainian surface-to-air missile system developed around a domestically designed interceptor missile. The project is intended for air defense against aerodynamic and ballistic targets, while the missile can also be used in exceptional cases against radar-significant targets on land or at sea.

Development work began in 2016, initially with the missile documented as part of a proposed ship-based surface-to-air missile system. The project later evolved toward a modular weapon intended for both land-based and naval air-defense applications.

In September 2026, Ukraine publicly showed the Koral self-propelled launcher for the first time at the MSPO defense exhibition in Poland. An image released by Ukraine's state defense industry showed a Koral missile being launched from a system mounted on a Czech-made Tatra truck chassis.

The project became publicly prominent in 2021, when the Luch State Design Bureau displayed a full-size Koral missile mock-up at the Arms and Security exhibition. At that stage, the missile was presented as a unified modular design for land-based and shipborne surface-to-air missile systems, with a possible air-to-air application also considered.

The 2021 configuration was described with an engagement range of up to 30 km and an engagement altitude of up to 10 km. It weighed about 300 kg, carried a 25 kg warhead, measured 4.33 m in length, and had a body diameter of 230/260 mm. Designers stated that the final characteristics could change according to customer requirements.

In 2021, Luch chief designer Oleh Korosteliov estimated that the overall system was approximately 70% complete. Luch was considering a broader family of Ukrainian air-defense systems with engagement ranges of approximately 10 km, 30-40 km, and up to 100 km, with Koral intended for the intermediate layer.

Later reports gave different range figures. A 2023 statement cited a range exceeding 100 km, while the earlier Luch figure was approximately 30 km. The guidance system combines an inertial navigation system, radio correction, and an active radar homing seeker. This arrangement allows the missile to receive guidance corrections during flight before using its own radar seeker for terminal homing.

Extensive component commonality was identified as an important design objective. Earlier descriptions stated that the project reused or shared proven components and technologies across Ukrainian missile programs, including propulsion, guidance, and other subsystems, with the aim of reducing the need for completely separate component sets.

Roles

Koral is primarily being developed to intercept aerodynamic and ballistic targets as part of an air-defense system. The developer has also stated that the missile may, in exceptional circumstances, be used against radar-significant ground or surface targets. Program status

The Koral program remained under development when the launcher was publicly revealed at MSPO in September 2026.
