History
The NORINCO Type 19 is a Chinese family of eight-wheeled armoured fighting vehicles developed as a successor to the Type 08 wheeled vehicle family. The principal infantry fighting vehicle configuration combines an 8x8 amphibious chassis with an unmanned turret and space for dismounted infantry.
A new Chinese 8x8 armoured vehicle associated with the later Type 19 family was observed in development in June 2020. Vehicles were reported in People's Liberation Army units by 2021, and the Type 19 designation was reported in connection with service entry in 2023.
In August 2026, images revealed another Type 19-based vehicle fitted with a turret-mounted laser counter-unmanned aerial system. As of 8 September 2026, the status of this laser-equipped vehicle was unclear, and it had not been confirmed whether it was operational, undergoing trials, or serving as a technology demonstrator.
Development
The Type 19 represents a further development of China's wheeled armoured vehicle line after the WZ-551 and Type 08 families. An open-source Type 19 overview describes the vehicle as a third-generation Chinese wheeled armoured fighting vehicle and reports that it was intended to improve upon and replace the Type 08 family.
By November 2023, reports stated that the People's Liberation Army Ground Force had received Type 19 infantry fighting vehicles. An Army Recognition report described the Type 19 as an upgraded development of the ZBL-08 and linked its manufacture to NORINCO. Photographs were reported to show vehicles associated with Chinese army units.
Information compiled in the Military Wiki summary similarly identifies the Type 19 as an amphibious 8x8 family and lists infantry fighting vehicle, assault-gun, and armoured personnel carrier configurations.
Laser-equipped vehicle
Images appearing on social media in late August 2026 showed a Type 19-based armoured fighting vehicle with a modified unmanned turret. Analysis published by Janes described the turret as carrying a 30 mm cannon together with a laser counter-unmanned aerial system weapon. This configuration could provide both direct-fire support and a short-range counter-drone capability.
The laser system appears intended for line-of-sight engagement of aerial targets detected by the vehicle's electro-optical equipment. The weapon directs a focused beam at one target at a time in an attempt to disable or destroy it. Janes assessed that the system could probably engage low-altitude, slow-moving unmanned aircraft at approximately 50-80 m altitude, although this was an analytical estimate rather than a confirmed performance specification.
The laser-equipped vehicle also appears to include equipment for thermal management. Cooling would be required to prevent the laser and associated electronic equipment from overheating during operation. Its observed configuration included day and night optical equipment, a laser rangefinder, and a roof-mounted panoramic sight. Box-shaped structures on both sides of the turret were visible, but their purpose was not confirmed; possible functions include ammunition stowage, sensors, armour modules, or missile equipment.
Design
The Type 19 uses an 8x8 wheeled chassis with the driver and engine compartment at the front and accommodation for infantry toward the rear. The standard infantry fighting vehicle uses an unmanned turret, which reduces the need for crew positions inside the turret structure and leaves more internal space available for personnel.
The vehicle is described as amphibious. Reported external features include a wave-deflector blade at the front of the hull and two propellers at the rear. These features are consistent with water-crossing capability.
Protection and mobility
Reports describe the Type 19 as having improved protection compared with the Type 08. Composite armour plates are fitted to the hull and turret, and the design has been described as having provisions for additional reactive armour. The suspension is reported to use a hydraulic height-adjustment system redesigned to support the vehicle's increased weight and improve mobility.
The powerplant has been reported as similar to that used by the ZBL-08, specifically a Deutz BF6M1015C diesel engine producing about 440 hp. This engine attribution has appeared in secondary reporting and should not be treated as an independently confirmed manufacturer specification for every Type 19 variant.
Sensors and electronics
Reported Type 19 equipment includes electro-optical observation systems, a meteorological sensor, communications equipment, a Beidou satellite-positioning antenna, laser-warning receivers, and identification-friend-or-foe equipment. Distributed sensors have also been reported around the vehicle body for wider threat detection.
Armament
The standard Type 19 infantry fighting vehicle is reported to carry a 30 mm automatic cannon in an unmanned turret, a coaxial 5.8 mm machine gun, and four HJ-16 anti-tank guided missiles. The missile launcher is positioned in an armoured enclosure on the right side of the turret. Twelve smoke-grenade launchers have also been reported on the standard infantry fighting vehicle.
Secondary sources describe the HJ-16 as a fire-and-forget capable guided missile with television and thermal seekers, inertial guidance, a man-in-the-loop datalink, and a reported range of 10 km. These missile characteristics are separate from the specifications of the Type 19 vehicle itself.
Operational history
The Type 19 infantry fighting vehicle was reported in People's Liberation Army service by 2023. Earlier observations in 2021 associated the new vehicle with units of the Eastern Theater Command in Guangdong. The vehicle has also been linked with the People's Liberation Army Ground Force more broadly.
The laser-equipped Type 19 variant revealed in 2026 has no confirmed operational history. Available reporting did not establish whether the vehicle had entered service, was being tested by the military, or existed only as a technology demonstrator.
