Paramount Mbada

History

The Paramount Mbada is a 4×4 light armored modular vehicle co-developed by Paramount and Kalyani Strategic Systems Limited (KSSL), the defense subsidiary of Bharat Forge. It was designed from the outset as a protected, mission-configurable platform for military and security applications.

The vehicle combines a relatively light approximately 10-tonne kerb weight with a 450 hp turbo-diesel engine, independent suspension and a modular architecture. Supported roles include reconnaissance, border protection, internal security, special forces operations, troop transport, logistics, command and control, surveillance and weapons carriage.

Mbada was publicly unveiled at the Africa Aerospace and Defence exhibition in Pretoria on September 17, 2026. This was the first international defense exhibition appearance under the Mbada name.

Development

Paramount and KSSL jointly developed the platform from inception rather than adapting an existing armored vehicle. The design was intended for customers in Africa, India, South Asia and other international markets, with provisions for customer-specific equipment and local mission requirements.

The underlying platform concept appeared earlier at Eurosatory 2026 in Paris under the name Simha. Simha was presented as the variant intended for India and other global markets, while Mbada became the name used for Africa and additional international customers.

Public unveiling

The Mbada made its AAD 2026 debut in Pretoria in September 2026. The vehicle was presented as a lightweight protected mobility platform intended to combine road and cross-country mobility with ballistic and mine protection while retaining flexibility for different mission systems.

Design

Mbada uses a fully welded monocoque hull. The armored hull itself forms the primary structural body rather than being mounted as a separate protected body on a conventional frame. The vehicle has four side doors and a roof turret ring for installation of a weapon station or other mission equipment.

The standard crew arrangement consists of four people: a driver, commander and two additional crew members. Both left-hand-drive and right-hand-drive configurations are available.

Protection

The monocoque hull provides STANAG 4569 Level 1 and Level 2 ballistic protection. Blast protection is stated at STANAG 4569 Level 2a and Level 2b, including protection against a 6 kg TNT-equivalent mine detonating beneath a wheel or beneath the hull.

Powertrain and mobility

Mbada is powered by a six-cylinder turbo-diesel engine rated at 450 hp (336 kW) and 1,627 Nm of torque. The engine is coupled to a six-speed automatic transmission and a two-speed lockable transfer case. Independent suspension is fitted at both the front and rear.

Maximum road speed is 110 km/h. The vehicle is designed to operate without special preparation in ambient temperatures from -20°C to +45°C.

Mission equipment

The modular architecture allows equipment to be selected for specific missions. Available integration options include weapons and ammunition racks, communications and intercom systems, C4I equipment, antenna mounts, roof-mounted searchlights, wire cutters, a central tire inflation system, run-flat tires, shooting ports, winches, snorkels, FLIR night-driving systems and parking sensors.

The platform can also accept a remote weapon station through its turret-ring arrangement. Equipment fit depends on the customer's selected configuration and mission.

Program status

As of its September 2026 unveiling, Mbada was being presented to military and security customers as a configurable protected mobility platform. The available information identifies target markets in Africa, India, South Asia and other regions but does not confirm a production order or operational operator for the Mbada configuration.
