History

Admiral Essen is a modern stealth guided missile frigate of the modern Russian Navy. The warship, named after the professional Russian soldier (era of the Russian Empire) Nikolai Ottovich Essen (1860-1915), was built by the Yantar shipyard in Kaliningrad.

Her keel was laid on 8 July 2011 and launched on 7 November 2014. After completing the required system and weapons tests, she officially entered service with the Navy on June 7, 2016, and has been active in the Black Sea Fleet until the present (2017).

Admiral Essen was built with the modern qualities of the "new" Russian Navy - much thought was put into keeping the warship "stealthy" by using special coatings on its surfaces and reducing the number of available projections. As a result, the superstructure is well integrated into the deck line, creating a very elegant looking warship.

Use slab edges where possible, including foredeck towers, bridge superstructure/hangar structures, and chimneys. The pipes are flat and the various masts are closed.

The warship has a crew of about 200. It has an overall length of 409 feet, a beam of 50 feet, and a draft of 14 feet.

This fairly shallow draft allows the ship to operate somewhat close to shore to support amphibious operations, although she is completely free to operate in "blue water" if necessary - either in cooperation with the main fleet or in Operate independently.

Power is provided by a COGAG (Combined Gas and Gas) unit consisting of two sets of marine gas turbines, each pair independently rated, one for low power cruising and the other for high power high speed cruising. There are two 22,000 hp DT-59 gas turbines and two 8,450 hp DS-71 gas turbines.

These propulsion power go to 2 shafts below the stern to propel the ship to speeds of up to 30 knots and a range of 4,850 nautical miles.

A large number of modern and advanced processing systems and sensors are on board. The air search function is provided by the "Fregat" M2EM system, and the ground search is provided by the cooperation of different units. Fire control is also handled by multiple network systems, and the electronic warfare (EW) suite is the TK-25E-5 series.

Countermeasures include KT-216 series launchers.

The heart of this guided missile frigate is its armament. Admiral Essen carries conventional projectile and missile types. Above the forecastle is a turret-mounted 100mm gun and two "Kashtan" digitally controlled close-in weapons systems (CIWS). 2 x 533 m twin-barreled torpedo launchers were also installed, as well as RBU-6000 anti-submarine rocket (ASROC) launchers.

The missile configuration consists of two Vertical Launch Systems (VLS), one as an 8-cell group (supporting Kalibr and 3M55 Oniks missiles) and the other as a 12-cell group supporting the 3S90M "Shtil-1" rocket family. In addition, there are eight "Igla-1E" (SA-16) launchers for close encounter anti-aircraft (AA) weapons.

In addition, the ship supports a Kamov "Helical" class naval helicopter (or similar) from its stern flight deck and hangar. The hangar provides comprehensive maintenance and support facilities for the aircraft, enabling the helicopter to provide the naval patrol, anti-ship/anti-submarine and beyond-visual-range capabilities of the warship.

The helicopter can also be used in a search and rescue (SAR) role if required.

There are currently (2017) six ships in the Admiral Grigorovich class program, three of which are active at the time of writing (2017). The remaining three are expected to come online by 2020 as part of the Black Sea Fleet.
