History

The Admiral Grigorovich-class guided-missile frigate serving the Russian Navy is planned to have six ships. The group is headed by Admiral Grigorovich (745) himself and currently (2018) includes Admiral Essen (751) and Admiral Makarov (799). The planned ships are Admiral Nutakov, Admiral Istomin and Admiral Kornilov.

All three completed ships are in service with the Black Sea Fleet. On February 29, 2012, Admiral Makarov, featured in this article, was laid at the Yantar shipyard in Kaliningrad, Russia.

She was launched on September 2, 2015, and officially commissioned on December 27, 2017, making it one of the newest additions to the Russian fleet.

Admiral Makarov is an advanced warship with stealth capabilities and low profile. It features a board-side design that minimizes overhangs and carries a range of advanced handling systems and weapons to suit many naval roles, including airspace deterrence, offshore attack and naval support. The smoke funnel is completely closed and has a flat design.

The mainmast is also low profile and is equipped with most of the sensors and processing systems needed to make the Makarov a viable modern warship. Above the stern is the helicopter flight deck, suitable for supporting a Kamov Ka-27 naval helicopter or similar vehicle.

The hangar provides full service capacity and can accommodate a second helicopter if required.

The ship displaces 3,620 tons under standard load and 4,035 tons under full load. The overall length reaches 410 feet, while the beam is 50 feet long and the draft is only 14 feet.

Power is provided by a COGAG (combined gas and gas) unit, paired with 2 x 8,450hp DS-71 gas turbines for cruising and 2 x 22,000hp DT-59 gas turbines for sprint maneuvers. The total power is 60,900 hp driving 2 axles under the stern.

The propulsion scheme allows the vessel to propel at 30 knots for a range of up to 4,850 nautical miles.

There is a crew of about 200 people on board. The ship's shop allows the ship to stay at sea for about a month.

The Fregat M2EM is used for the air search function, while the 3Rs-25E Garpun-B, MR-212/201-1 and Nucleus-2 6000A all make up the surface search kit. Fire control is commanded by JSC-5P-10E "Puma", 3R14N-11356 and MR-90 Orekh SAM systems.

Electronic Warfare (EW) includes TK-25E-5 kit and 4 x KT-216 systems for launching decoys.

Installed weapons include a mixture of ballistic and missile weapon types. 1 x 100mm A-190 Armory Main Gun, turret located above the forecourt. 1 x 8 cell UKSK Vertical Launch System (VLS) capable of firing Kalibr and 3M55 Oniks surface-to-surface missiles from a distance.

2 x 12 cell VLS to accommodate 3S90M Shtil-1 series surface-to-air missiles. Additional air defense is provided by 8 x Igla-1E missile launchers and 2 x Kashtan Close-In Weapon System (CIWS).

Two twin-barreled 533mm torpedo launchers can deal with surface and submarine threats, the latter of which can also be addressed by installing the RBU-6000 Anti-Submarine Rocket (ASROC) launcher unit.

As of this writing (2018), Admiral Makarov remains active in the Russian fleet??.
