Aydin (class)

History

Since 2005, the modern Turkish Navy has operated ships of the Aydin class in the role of "Minenjager", six ships based on German models. The first vessel in this class, the TCG Alanya (M-265), was built at the Abeking & Rasmussen shipyard in Lurssen, Germany, followed by five other sister vessels TCG Ayvalik (M-267), TCG Amasra (M-266), TCG Akcakoca (M-268), TCG Anamur (M-269) and TCG Akcay (M-270). This batch was built by the local naval shipyard in Istanbul, Turkey.

Alanya started operating with Amasra in July 2005. Ayvalik and Akcakoca followed in June and September 2007, respectively.

Because of their names (both start with the letter "A"), this class is also called "Class A". As of this writing (2019), all six ships are active in the Turkish Navy.

When completed, the battleship will displace 650 tons, have a length of 178 feet, a beam of 30 feet, and a draft of 8.5 feet. The hull has unique, built-in non-magnetic properties, modeled after the German Navy - which greatly increases the survivability of the class.

Propulsion power comes from 2 x MTU 16V 538 TB91 marine diesel engines connected to 2 x electric motors and connected to 2 x Renik PLS25E drivetrains. This arrangement drives 2 axles under the stern and propels the speed of the vessel to nearly 18 knots.

There are about 41 crew members on board. Marconi 2093 series VDS units are used for sonar mine detection. DRBN 32 is the navigation radar system for warships. 2 x "Barricade chaff and flares for missile defense.

Mounted weapons include 1 x 30mm autocannon and 2 x 12.7mm machine guns (HMG) for extreme close range defense. 2x PAP-105 Mk. Series 5 mine detectors are also carried. Mining experts also offer full diving facilities.
