History
The Yavuz-class frigates were designed in Germany as part of the MEKO modular battleship series; in this case, the MEKO 200 design. In April 1983, the Turkish government signed a ship order for four MEKO frigates. With German help, two ships were built in Germany and two in Turkey.
They are similar in design to the Turkish Navy's larger Barbaros-class frigates, which are upgraded versions of the Yavuz-class frigates.
The Turkish Navy is conducting a limited electronic warfare suite modernization project. The aim is to upgrade the vessel with locally manufactured ECM, ECCM systems, active decoys, LWR, IRST and required user interface systems.
The Turgutreis was launched at Kiel on 30 May 1986 by Howaldtswerken-Deutsche Werft and entered service on 4 February 1988.
