History

In the late 1980s and throughout the 1990s, the Turkish Navy invested in two new main combat frigate types - the Yavuz and Barbaros classes. Both were built to the German design criteria for the multi-purpose "MEKO", which was developed under the "MEKO 200" (or "Improved MEKO") initiative.

German shipyard Blohm & Voss did most of the original work to set up the course, some of which was also done at the local shipyard in Turkey.

The first batch of four warships adopted the diesel or combined diesel (CODOD) propulsion scheme, and the second batch of Barbaros class warships switched to the diesel or natural gas combined propulsion scheme (CODOG) for higher operating speed. The armament is also slightly There are changes, the command system, radar and crew/system protection have all been improved. The TCG Orucreis became one of the numbers for the Barbaros class, built by the local Gorcuk Naval Shipyard in Turkey.

She was launched on July 28, 1994, and officially commissioned on May 23, 1997, serving in the modern Turkish Navy.

The Barbaros class consists of the main ship TCG Barbaros (F-244) and sister ships TCG Orucreis (F-245), TCG Salihreis (F-246) and TCG Kemalreis (F-247). All designed for 3,400 tons, they form 8 of the 16 frigates available to the Turkish Navy today (2018) (including the Yavuz and Gabya classes).

Tour

At first glance, the Orucreis appears to be a fairly conventional, humble frigate by modern, stealth-centric standards. The forecastle is usually raised slightly and extends to the front of the hull superstructure.

In the prominent "A" position is a deck gun with a turret and an excellent angle of attack. The superstructure has low slab side walls interrupted by a single gap close to the midship. The front of the superstructure contains the bridge as well as the exposed lattice main mast. Paired smoke pods are enclosed and tilted outward, while located near midship along with four-barreled anti-ship missile (ASM) launchers.

The structure extends all the way to the stern to provide space for other systems and weapons, including the Sea Sparrow missile mount. The stern area is dominated by the helipad.

Structures, propulsion and systems

The TCG Orucreis has a displacement of 3,380 tons, an overall length of 383 feet, a beam of 48.5 feet, and a draft of 14 feet. Between 170 and 190 crew members (including a modest squadron support staff) were on board. The stern helipad supports medium navy helicopters or similar.

His CODOG installation consists of 2 GE LM2500 gas turbines linked to 2 MTU marine diesel engines producing up to 60,000 hp on 2 shafts (steerable pitch). The maximum attainable speed is 32 knots and the range is 4,100 nautical miles.

An economical CODOG arrangement provides variable power as needed to enhance specific maneuvers (general cruising or overspeed) while maximizing operating range.

Airborne systems include AWS-9 3D air search radar, AWS-6 Dolphin air/ground search radar, and STIR surface-to-air missile (SAM) guidance suite. A separate Decca 2040 system provides navigation aids, while the SQS-56 is a hull mounted sonar unit.

The SLQ-25 "Nixie" is the ultimate ship rescue torpedo decoy.

Armed

Above the forecastle is a single-barreled 5"/54 caliber Mark 45 deck gun with turret. This is supported by 2 x Mk. 141 "Harpoon" ASM in a quad launcher pack amidships . 1 x 16-cell Mk. 41 Mod 8 Vertical Launch System (VLS) equipped to fire RIM-162 ESSM "Sea Sparrow" anti-aircraft missiles.

3 x 25mm Oerlikon-Contrave "Sea Zenith" system for close defense 2 x Mark 32 torpedoes All in all , the warship has the ability to fight against air, land, sea and underwater targets, making it a true multi-purpose warship battle frigate.

Services

TCG Orucreis participated in general patrol and training operations during their life at sea. In 2014, she and her crew helped train Nigerian Navy personnel to better fight piracy.
