History
The BAP Herrera (CM-24) is a fast attack boat/missile frigate of the modern Peruvian Navy. This type was built in France using the original French design as the standard for "OR-72P class" frigates and is one of six such ships in service in the Peruvian fleet.
The ship was commissioned on February 26, 1981.
The Herrera has a displacement of 560 tons, a barrel length of 64 meters, a beam length of 8.35 meters, and a draft of up to 2.6 meters. Her compact qualities allow the vessel to operate close to shore, increasing tactical flexibility.
Power comes from 4 MTU 12V595 marine diesel engines driving 22,000 hp on 4 axles under the stern. In open water, the boat can sail at speeds of up to 36 knots and range up to 2,500 miles.
The ship's profile is traditional: an enclosed turret is usually located in the "A" position forward of the bridge superstructure, and the hull structure contains a lattice mast to mount sensors, radar and communications equipment. The superstructure then tapers to form the stern section. Forty-eight crew members were on board.
The systems installed include Thomson-CSF's THD 1040 "Triton" air surface search radar, Decca BridgeMaster E navigation system and Thomson-CSF "Vega II" and "Castor II" fire control systems. Electronic warfare (EW) is handled by the Thomson-CSF DR-2000 ESM kit.
Weapons are a mix of projectile and missile based weapons. Above the forecastle is a 76mm/62 caliber OTO Melara deck gun with turret. This is supported by a 1 x 40mm L/70 OTO-Melara DARDO dual automatic gun emplacement.
The ship also carries 4 x MM.38 "Flying Fish" anti-ship missile launchers and can also support MANPAD systems such as the Russian "Igla" shoulder-mounted delivery system through a trainable mount.
Despite her limited missile armament, Herrera is actually recognized by the Peruvian Navy as a guided missile frigate.
