Boikiy (532) History
The modern Russian Navy currently (2017) deploys five Steregushchiy-class guided missile frigates. Of the roughly a dozen programs, seven are completed and five are on active duty. These include the Boikiy (532) built by Sevemaya Verf of St. Petersburg.
She was launched on July 27, 2005, and April 15, 2011. The battleship officially entered service on May 16, 2013, and was assigned to the Baltic Fleet.
The Boikiy displaces 2,100 tons at full load, has a length of 343 feet, a beam of 36 feet, and a draft of 12 feet. Her propulsion scheme is a CODAD (Combined Diesel and Diesel Diesel) arrangement, allowing full or partial use of the ship's diesel engines at full speed or general cruising as a necessary economic measure.
Power is provided by 4 x 16D49 series diesel engines producing 24,000 hp on 2 x axles. 4 diesel generators (630 kW output) were also installed. This arrangement enables the warship to travel at 26 knots for a range of up to 4,000 nautical miles.
For a crew of 100, the duration of onboard storage and fuel supply is about 15 days.
Boikiy is fitted with Furke-E 3D air search radar and TK-25E-5 Electronic Countermeasures (ECM) system. The 4 launchers of the PK-10 series can be used as decoys if necessary. Armament includes 1 x 100mm A-190 deck gun and turret and 2 x AK-630M Close-In Weapon System (CIWS).
Carry 2 x 4 330mm torpedo tubes and 2 x 14.5mm MTPU machine guns for extreme close combat.
However, at the heart of the Boikiy's weapon is a 32-cell rocket launcher that houses either a 9M96E/M or 9M100 surface-to-air missile (SAM). There are also 8 x 3M24 missile launchers, enabling the warship to fight almost any incoming threat from afar.
To further extend the ship's over-the-horizon capabilities, there is a helipad above the stern for piloting a Kamov Ka-27 anti-submarine/anti-ship helicopter.
Boikiy's silhouette is so modern that most crowds focus on building. The superstructure is well adapted to the existing shape of the hull, reducing protrusions that can increase the ship's character to the detection radar system. Above the forecastle is the turret with the main deck guns. The bridge integrates with the superstructure and offers impressive forecastle and port and starboard views.
The smoke funnel is also one piece, and the overall height is low. The structure is graded to the aft helideck.
Boikiy was one of the Russian warships involved in the April 2017 incident, several of which passed through the English Channel and were noticed by the Royal Navy. HMS Sutherland was asked to escort the vessel as it passed through the waters.
