History
The
Type 039 submarine was the first of its kind to be designed, developed and built entirely in China when it entered service with the People's Liberation Army Navy in June 1999. The state-of-the-art vessel is a conventionally powered diesel-electric submarine capable of performing traditional attack or deterrence missions as needed.
It is part of the Chinese Navy's 13 "Song-class" underwater combat boats.
When complete, the ship will displace 2,250 tons underwater. It has a length of 75 meters, a width of 8.4 meters and a draft of up to 5.3 meters. Its diesel-electric propulsion powers a single shaft, and when the boat dives to a depth of 300 meters, it reaches a speed of 22 knots. A typical crew consists of 60 officers and soldiers divided into watches.
The armament is centered on six torpedo tubes, and the ship can carry up to 18 rounds in total. Its launch tubes can also assist in launching anti-ship missiles against inland targets.
This weapon can be replaced with 36 mines when the ship is called to minefields and vital waterways against enemy invaders.
Sensor and processing systems include Thomson-CSF TSM-2233 sonar system, TSM-2255 low frequency sonar system and H/SQG-04 passive ranging sonar kit.
