ROKS Yi Sun-Shin (SSK-068) Story
ROKS Lee Sunsin (SSK-068) serves the modern South Korean Navy (ROK Navy) as part of nine powerful Chang Bogo-class diesel-electric attack submarines. The team began commissioning the lead ship Chang Bogo (SSK-061) in 1993. Yi Sun-shin (SSK-068) joined her sisters in 2000.
This class design serves the South Korean Navy and the Indonesian Navy (three ships), the latter being considered an improved version of the base class design.
Lee Sunsin had a displacement of up to 1,400 tons, a barrel length of 184 feet, a beam of 21 feet, and a draft of 18 feet. Inside were thirty-three men, consisting of officers and soldiers.
Externally, the vessel uses the proven submarine attack design line, with a smooth profile, midship set and a ribbed stern section.
The boat is usually powered by a hybrid unit of diesel turbines and electric motors. There are 4 x MTU 8V396 SE (German origin) diesel engines for surface cruising and 1 x Siemens 5,000hp electric motor for underwater cruising. Both systems push power to a single shaft at the stern. Surface speeds reach 11 knots, while underwater, the boat can travel at speeds in excess of 21 knots. The range is up to 11,000 nautical miles surface and 400 nautical miles underwater.
In total, it can stay at sea for about 50 days and can reach a depth of 1,600 feet before needing refueling/resupply.
The armament consists of 8 x 21" (530 mm) torpedo tubes and 14 x SUT torpedo rear mounts. It can also fire the US-built UGM-84 Harpoon Anti-Ship Missile (ASM) to reach surface targets.
