History of Combat Boat 90 (CB90) / Stridsbat 90H
The Swedish shipyard Dockstavarvet has built a state-of-the-art boat with the Combat Boat 90 (CB90/CB90H). The ship can be equipped for a range of combat, special operations support, and search and rescue missions, and can even be converted into a floating ambulance. The main selling point of the boat is its lightweight aluminium frame, which promotes fast and nimble water characteristics and allows the boat to operate in shallow waters. The CB90H type armored warship has a speed of 40 knots (74 km/h), and the non-military light CB90 version can reach speeds of up to 50 knots (92.6 km/h).
At a constant speed of 20 knots, the combat range is approximately 240 nmi (440 km).
The propulsion system of the CB90 series consists of twin-channel water jets with underwater control surfaces similar to those of a submarine's submersible aircraft. The boat can make very sharp turns at near full speed while controlling its pitch and roll angles. She can also come to a complete stop within 130 feet (or two and a half boat lengths) when decelerating from 40 knots. Power comes from two Kamewa FF waterjet propulsion units, each powered by 460kW DS114 Series V-8 diesel engines rated up to 1,250 hp. Displacement is 13,000 kg (28,660 lb) empty and 20,500 kg (45,190 lb) when ready to sail.
The ship is 52 feet (15.9 meters) long with a beam of 12 feet 6 inches (3.8 meters), while her draft is only 2 feet 8 inches (0.8 meters). A narrow landing ramp is provided.
The Combat CB90H is a fast attack craft that can perform boarding operations and can also be used as a landing craft. Her movements are controlled by two officers - a captain and a helmsman. Her cabin can accommodate 21 combat-ready troops (plus gear) or up to 4.5 tons (9,000 lbs) of cargo in the center of the vehicle. Two Browning 12.7mm heavy machine guns are located in fixed forward positions, both remotely controlled by monitors in the cab. A third machine gun (or 40mm automatic grenade launcher) can be mounted on a ring mount at the rear of the cab for additional fire support.
The ship can support the RBS 18 Hellfire surface-to-surface missile (SSM) anti-tank system, or, depending on the mission, four mines or up to six depth charges. Amos' twin-barreled 12cm gyro-stabilized mortar is also located aft of the cab. This mortar system can provide the crew with an impressive "mobile" firing capability of 26 rounds per minute at a range of 10 kilometers.
The latest configuration has a 125mm main gun mounted on the bow PT-91 turret, which is also controlled from the wheelhouse. 7. A 62mm general-purpose machine gun with a higher rate of fire and a lighter load, which can replace all 12.7mm machine guns if necessary.
Additionally, crews can rely on personal, crew-operated weapons to enhance the CB90's offensive and defensive capabilities.
The Srb 90 HS version is armored and has nuclear, biological and chemical (NBC) protection for warfare throughout the ship. Air conditioning and fuel cooling systems can be used in the tropics, but need to upgrade the propulsion engine and install a 220-volt alternator. Some of the requirements for police and security conscious clients include rest berths, a full crew lounge and galley.
Further upgrades to the CB90 series are still planned, with maintenance and testing to extend the strength of the excellent vessel.
In addition to Sweden, Greece, Malaysia, Mexico, Norway and the United States of America are currently among the operators. Sweden is by far the largest operator with 200 vessels in service. Mexico itself serves 48. The United States purchased at least two CB90s.
