History of Marshal Ustinov (Atlanta 1164 Project)

Marshal Ustinov (055) is a guided missile cruiser in service with the modern Russian Navy and one of three ships that meet the criteria of the Slava class. The group, consisting of sisters Moskva and Varyag, is a product of the late Cold War and was built according to a 12,500-ton full-load displacement and multi-mission design approach.

The warship is currently assigned to the Northern Fleet and home ports outside Severomorsk with the 43rd Missile Ship Division.

The Russian Navy is one of the few naval powers that still relies on "cruiser" warships. These surface combatants represent larger size warships, smaller than aircraft carriers but larger than destroyer types.

Marshal Ustinov was launched on October 5, 1978, launched for sea trials on February 25, 1982, and officially commissioned on September 19, 1986. Before the collapse of the Soviet Empire, the warship was originally known as the Admiral Flota Lobov.

Marshal Ustinov displaces 10,000 tons under standard load and can reach 12,700 tons under full load. She has a length of 611.7 feet, a beam of 68.2 feet, and a draft of up to 27.6 feet. Her propulsion scheme is a COGOG (Gas or Gas Combination) unit with 4 x 31,250hp gas turbines for sprint maneuvers and 2 x 12,000hp gas turbines for cruising maneuvers.

This allows the warship to reach speeds of up to 34 knots and a range of up to 9,000 nautical miles (10,000 miles) under ideal conditions.

With a crew of 505, the ship is equipped with state-of-the-art solutions including MR-800 "Vochkod"/"Top Pair" long-range 3-D air search radar, MR-700 "Fregat"/"Top Steer" radar , Airframe-mounted MG-332 "Tigan-2T"/"Bull Nose" sonar and MR-184 "Kite Screech" Fire Control System (FCS) for firepower Electronic Directional Warfare (EW) by Gurzhor-A&B/ Kol'cho kit handling of the "Side Globe" interception system. MR-404 "Rum Tub" jamming units were also deployed to defend the ship.

The vessel also supports a single Kamov Ka-25 or Ka-27 attack helicopter for anti-submarine warfare (ASW) from the stern helipad.

The warship is equipped with 8 x 2 launchers, containing a total of 16 x P-500 "Bazalt" (SS-N-12 "Sandbox") (modernized to P-1000 "Vulcan") anti-ship missiles (8 8 x 8 launchers for 64 x S-300F "Fortress" (SA-N-6 "Grumble") long-range surface-to-air missile (SAM) , 2 x 20 (40 total) OSA-M (SA-N-4 "Gecko") short-range SAMs. In addition to this missile weapon, there is a 130mm/L70 AK-130 Dual Purpose (DP) deck gun with turret, 6 x AK-630 Closed Weapon System (CIWS) and 10 x (2x5) 533mm torpedo tubes .

After commissioning in 1986, during the collapse of the Soviet Union (1947-1991), she completed several Mediterranean tours while making several stops on the East Coast of the United States. In 1994, she underwent extensive refit and repair before returning to service with the Russian fleet in May 1995.

After a few voyages, she underwent an overhaul at the Zvyozdochka shipyard in 2012, where her landing gear, hull and subsystems were all treated better - bringing her more in line with Western modern digital drive offerings. She returned to active duty in 2016 and officially began operations the following year.

Over the next few years, further friendly port visits welcomed the warship and included several intense training exercises to fully demonstrate the ship's capabilities. In January 2020, it was announced that the warship would be temporarily stationed off the coast of Syria due to the ongoing civil war in Syria - with Russia backing the current regime and the West backing the country's insurgents.
