History of Ukraine (Komsomol / Admiral Flota Lobov)

Ukraine is a Ukrainian Slava-class cruiser originally ordered by the Soviet Union in the early 1980s under the name Admiral Flota Lobov. After the collapse of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s, the ship sailed to Russia and then to Ukraine, where it was named Ukraine.

In 2010, the Ukrainian parliament named the ship after it. The vessel remains unfinished and is currently moored at Mykolayiv Shipyard (former 61 Kommunara Shipyard).

The ship was laid in 1983 and launched in 1990 on the eve of the collapse of the Soviet Union. Due to budget constraints, work on the cruiser stopped in the early 1990s and the ship remains unfinished. In 1993, the cruiser was withdrawn from the Russian Navy and handed over to Ukraine. In 1997, Ukraine announced that it did not need the cruiser and was ready to sell it. Russia was reluctant to buy the cruiser and as a result approached China and India, but showed no interest at the time.

In addition, the U.S. government has asked the Ukrainian government to stop providing military technology to China in exchange for joining NATO and providing economic aid. In 2007, the cruiser required $30 million to complete, according to Ukrainian sources.
