History of Nakhimov (889) (Item 21980)

Nakhimov (hull number 889) is part of the Grachonok class "anti-saboteur" patrol ships used by the modern Russian Navy. The group is planned as a 16-person class, also known as "Project 21980." Construction of the ships began in 2008 and commissioning has been ongoing since 2010.

At the time of writing (2017), as many as 12 are in service.

The ships will displace 138 tons, have a bow to stern length of 101.9 feet, a beam of 24.2 feet, and a draft of 6 feet. This last feature makes the vessel a first-class operator in coastal and river operations.

Propulsion is provided by a twin-boat diesel engine unit, which increases the speed of modern designs to 23 knots under ideal conditions. Due to the high level of automation built into these ships, only eight crew members are required for maximum functionality.

With fuel and food supplies on board, the ship can stay at sea for up to five days.

The airborne MR-231 "Pal" system is used for navigation, the "Kalmar" is the main sonar, and the MG-757 "Anapa-M" is the towed sonar array. MTK-201M2 provides photoelectric TV function. Armament includes a DP-65A remote-controlled grenade launcher and a DP-64 series grenade launcher.

There is also a 14.5mm MTPU heavy machine gun and a portable Igla-1 SAM system (four loaded missiles), as well as all personal weapons carried by the crew.

Nakhimov was built and laid at Zelenodolsk shipyard on February 8, 2008. She was launched on April 25, 2009, and officially commissioned on May 4, 2010. She currently sails as part of the Baltic Fleet.
