Gurza-M (Project 58155)

History

The modern Ukrainian Navy operates a small fleet of 12 four ships of various classes. Part of this is the 54-ton "Gurza-M" class (project 58155) patrol boats, classified as "artillery" boats, designed for river and near-shore operations.

The six ships - Akkerman (P174), Berdyansk (P175), Nikopol (P176), Kremenchuk (P177), Lubny (P178) and Vyshhorod (P179) - have extensive armament and state-of-the-art technical tracking and facilities Designed to enable them to deal with most mild to moderate threats.

The design of these ships was influenced by the "58150" armoured riverboat, construction of the first two ships started in October 2012. Funding issues delayed commissioning until 2016, and a second batch of four ships was ordered in March of that year. Twenty of these ships were initially planned, but as of October 2018, the Ukrainian Navy had completed only six (one of which was still Under construction, eight are planned by 2020).

The ships will be built at the PJSC Leninska Kuznya factory in Kyiv, Ukraine.

These boats have a completely modern design with board edge hulls and low profiles. The "A" position on the foredeck contained a deck gun that fired a wide arc of fire from the front of the hull. Again, the same deck guns are located at the rear of the ship.

The bridge structure is perfectly integrated with the lower hull, presenting a continuous hull line from bow to stern. Above the bridge section is a towering mast that houses the required array of radar, sensors and communications equipment.

The dimensions of the boat include an overall length of 23 meters, a beam of 4.8 meters and a draft of 1 meter. The shallow draft is particularly noteworthy because it provides the mass needed when maneuvering close to shore and enables ships to access a coastline that is critical to Ukraine's security and economy.

The main weapon is 2 x BM-5M. 01 "Katran-M" remote control deck gun with turret, in tandem. The turret houses a 30mm ZTM-1 automatic cannon with 1 x 7.62mm CT coaxial machine gun and 2 x Short-Range Surface-to-Air Missiles (SAM).

The ship is also equipped to fire Barrier anti-tank missiles (ATGMs) at moving ground targets within range. This is in addition to any personal weapons carried by the crew.

Propulsion comes from 2 marine diesel units, with a maximum speed of 25 knots under ideal conditions and a range of up to 900 nautical miles. Supplies on board give the ship the ability to sail at sea for up to five days before it is needed.

November 2018 - Two Gurza-M patrol boats and a tugboat were violently taken over by Russian forces in the Sea of ??Azov (Sea of ??Azov, northeast of the Black Sea).
