RSS Dauntless (69) History

RSS Intrepid (69) is the second named ship in the Mighty class of stealth guided missile frigates in service with the modern Republic of Singapore Navy. The squad is led by RSS Formidable and includes four other sister ships for a total of six.

With stealth capabilities and advanced systems and processing at the heart of the design, the powerful class lives up to its name. The team was deployed as the successor to the aging Seawolf-class unit, a Cold War-era missile gunship.

French shipyard DCNS and local interest ST Engineering (Navy) were involved in the construction of the RSS Intrepid. She was launched on July 3, 2004, and officially commissioned on February 5, 2008 (same day as sisters RSS Steadfast and RSS Tenacious).

At the time of construction, the warship had a displacement of 3,200 tons, an overall length of 376.7 feet, a beam of 53.5 feet, and a draft of 19.7 feet. Installed power is in a CODAD ("Combined Diesel and Diesel") arrangement with 4 MTU 20V8000 M90 engines of 12,200 hp each and 4 ISM V1708 diesel generators of 1,150 hp each.

Under ideal conditions, the maximum speed can reach 27 knots, and the range can reach 4200 nautical miles.

There are 71 crew members on board, plus 19 crew members who make up the wing section. The air wing consists of up to two Sikorsky S-70B Seahawks, equipped for missions such as maritime cargo delivery, search and rescue (SAR) and submarine/vessel hunting.

A full-service hangar is attached to the aft flight deck. The hangar itself can accommodate two helicopters, and the helipad is available for a third bird.

Sensors and processing systems include Thales Herakles multifunctional passive electronically scanned array (PESA) search radar, Thales STING EO Mk. 2 fire control (FC) radar, and Terma Electronic Sca??anter 2001 navigation radar.

The system forms an Electronic Countermeasures (ECM) suite and has multiple Sagem Defense Securite Next Generation Dagaie System decoy installations.

This warship is equipped to deal with threats on the water, underwater and in the air over long distances. To achieve this, she carries 8 x RGM-84C Harpoon anti-ship missile launchers with 24 reloads, 2 x 8 cells Sylver A50 Vertical Launch System (VLS) for MBDA Aster 15/30 Surface-to-air missiles, 2 x 8 cell Sylver A43 VLS for additional Aster 15 SAM and 2 x B515 triple torpedo tubes for EuroTorp A244/S Mod 3 torpedo stock. More conventional firepower comes from a single 76mm OTO-Melara ultra-fast deck gun with a turret located above the first floor.

2 x 25mm Mk 38 Mod 2 "Typhoon" weapon stations are also installed for close range threats, and close range defense is further enhanced by the installation of 4 x 12.7mm CIS 50MG heavy machine guns.

The RSS Interpid has a futuristic design with enclosed bosses and masts, board side panels and uninterrupted hull lines and flat extensions. The main deck guns overlooked the bow and the rocket section was directly behind. Behind it is a bridge section with a pyramid-shaped closed mast.

The higher main mast is set near the midship and is also closed. The smoke funnel is integrated into the rear of the fuselage structure and is designed to minimize heat signatures. Steel was used extensively in the construction of this warship.

In 2008, the ship was tasked with the first test firing of the French Aster 15 SAM weapon, which was successfully carried out off the coast of the French city of Toulon. In 2012, she joined Joint Task Force 151, a combat unit formed to combat persistent piracy in Somalia. This was the ship's first combat-oriented deployment, during which she was able to actively launch a combat-grade S-70 helicopter.

In mid-December this year, she returned to her hometown. The warship carried out another such mission in March 2014.

As of this writing (2018), RSS Intrepid is still in use.
