History of the Sovremennyy class (Project 956 Sarych)

Like many of the world's leading naval powers, the Russian Navy has a healthy fleet of destroyer warships - about 13 in total - behind the US (65), Japan (36) and China (29) . This type of vessel builds fast in water, uses internal fuel to reach distant targets, and can be used as a stand-alone solution/deterrent or as part of a workhorse. The type's ability to have flexible weapons enhances deployment flexibility, enabling ships to respond to virtually any maritime threatair, sea, or underwater.

Destroyer of the Russian Navy

The Russian Navy currently (2018) operates three different batches of destroyer warships - Kashin class, Udaloy class and Sovremennyy class. The Sovremennyy class (Project 956) had a total of 21 ships at the time of final acceptance and final completion, although today (2018) only three of them are in active service: Bystryy, Nastoychivyy and Admiral Ushakov, who were commissioned in 1989, 1993 and 1994 respectively Years of service (Burnyy will be modernized at this point in 2018). All displacements are in the range of 7,940 tons.

Bestry was assigned to the Pacific Fleet, Nastoichvij to the Baltic Fleet, and Admiral Ushakov to the Northern Fleet.

All built by Severnaya Verf 190 in St. Petersburg.

There are 350 crew members on board. The Air Force is part of the crew, as a single heliport can support a Kamov Ka-27 "Helix" (or similar) Navy helicopter, equipped for anti-submarine warfare (ASW) at sea, anti-ship or resupply missions.

Silhouette

The collection has a typical Soviet-era design look and appears in the "pre-stealth" era at the end of the Cold War (1947-1991). They feature a high bowline and a wide main deck. The main guns on the forecastle and poop have turrets.

The bridge and enclosed main mast are integrated into the high forward superstructure, leaving a gap with the central corner funnel. On the platform behind the chimney, there is a latticed postbox that towers into the sky. Behind the funnel is a helipad for the tiered superstructure section.

Four-sided surface-to-surface missile launchers can be seen on both sides of the bridge superstructure.

The class is equipped with no less than three navigation radars, one air target acquisition radar, fire control radar/director and one anti-aircraft fire control radar. Will carry active and passive sonar systems, as well as a complete decoy launch system.

Armed

Armament includes 2 x 130mm AK-130-MR-184 main guns and dual front and rear cannons, 4 x 30mm AK-630 Close-In Weapon System (CIWS), 2 x 4 P-270 (SS - N - 22 pcs) "Sunburn") "Moskit" surface-to-surface/anti-ship missiles and 2 x 24 Shtil (SA-N-12 "Grizzly") surface-to-air missile launchers. 4 x 533mm torpedo tubes (in two twin tube positions) can be used to deal with both surface and underwater threats.

2 x RBU-1000 300mm anti-submarine rocket launchers for long-range anti-submarine work.

Additional Notes

The class consists of two forms: the original Type 956 ships and the successor Type 956A ships with improved 3M80M anti-ship missile modifications. The Chinese Navy has a third branch in the 956EM project design. From 1994 to 2004, China adopted a total of 4 ships of this class.

All remain operational.

For the Russian Navy, many classes were retired at the end of the Cold War (many were retired in 1998). Burnyy plans to modernize and overhaul to make her a viable surface fighter in the near future. Bespokoynyy was rescued from scrap and used as a floating museum ship in Kronstadt.
