History

Over the past two decades, the modern Turkish navy has made great strides in global legitimacy and regional power projection. Currently (2019), its forces can deploy up to 10 combat frigates, 4 of which belong to the state-of-the-art "Ada class". Led by TCG Heybeliada (F-511), the class includes sister ships TCG Buyukada (F-512), TCG Burgazada (F-513) and TCG Kinaliada (F-514).

The group displaces 2,535 tons (short) and is designed for anti-submarine warfare (ASW) missions with inherent patrolling capabilities.

The Ada class was born as a Turkish national policy to incorporate as many Turkish resources as possible into the design, development and construction of warships. Twelve of the series were originally planned, but only four have been completed (as of April 2019), and these were designed specifically for the Turkish Navy.

Equipped with proven stealth technology, advanced combat and survival systems, and weapons consistent with frigate-type warships, these types are capable of operating in offshore (in support of amphibious operations) as well as "blue water" environments far from home.

The TCG Burgazada (F-513) featured in this article was finalized on December 17, 2014 and launched on June 21, 2016. She officially entered service on November 4, 2018, and remains in active duty with the "F-513" pennant on her fuselage.

Structurally, the warship has a barrel length of 326.5 feet, a beam of 47.1 feet, and a draft of 12.8 feet. The displacement reached 2340 tons (short).

Installed systems include a comprehensive combat management system (CMS), as well as search radar, GPS navigation, sonar and fire control radar (FCR). The CMS is completely indigenous in design and marked "GENESIS".

From the outside, this warship exudes all the refined lines of a modern warship: stealth is achieved through a small number of protrusions on the vehicle, including the board-side hull design and the integrated hull-to-superstructure lines. The bridge is integrated with the superstructure and the main mast is closed.

A low profile funnel helps reduce the character of the vessel, and a stepped format is used at the rear of the vessel.

Installed power comes from a CODAG (Combined Diesel and Gas) unit consisting of 1 gas turbine and 2 marine diesel engines rated at 42,430 hp, and 2 shafts under the stern. This gives the vessel a maximum sea speed of about 30 knots and a range of 3,500 nautical miles.

On board, the boat can accommodate up to 106 crew members and has a dedicated wing for operating the helicopter from the stern area. Food and supplies allow the ship to stay at sea for ten consecutive days, or up to twenty-one days when fleet support is taken into account.

Above the stern is a combined helicopter/hangar platform that can load/recover up to two medium naval helicopters. These helicopters can be used to further expand the ship's anti-submarine warfare capabilities, assist in search and rescue (SAR) operations, and perform general patrol and fleet resupply missions as needed.

In addition, the warship supports fully recoverable unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) at sea.

The armament is essentially ballistic missile oriented. On the forecastle is a 76mm (Italian) OTO-Melara "ultra-fast" deck gun with a Dual Purpose (DP) turret (Ship Attack and Offshore Land Attack).

She carries 8 x (US) Harpoon anti-ship missile launchers and 21 x Rolling Airframe Missiles (RAM) for air defense denial missions. 2 x 324 mm triple torpedo tubes can be used against surface and underwater targets as required.

For extreme close range defense work there are 2 x 12.7mm Aselsan STAMP weapon systems.
