History
The United States Navy (USN) commissioned a fleet of 71 Oliver Hazard Perry-class guided missile frigates during the Cold War (1947-1991). These ships have been in service since 1977 and played an important role in the war between East and West.
With the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 and a shift to the more advanced Freedom- and Independence-class ships, the Hazard-Perry class ships were either retired or broken up and sold to U.S. allies in the post-Cold War era. These include Australia, Pakistan, Taiwan and Turkey.
Turkey took over a fleet of eight ships, including the USS Samual Eliot Morison (FFFG-13). The Turkish government acquired the warship on April 11, 2002 and redesignated it as TCG Gokova (F-496), and to this day (2019) she is still making history at sea.
In service with the Turkish Navy, the warship belongs to the "G class", better known as the "Gabya class".
The Turkish Navy has a total of sixteen frigate-type warships, divided into three different classes.
For propulsion, the F-496 is powered by 2 General Electric LM2500-30 series gas turbines producing 41,000 hp and driving a single shaft aft. There are also 2 auxiliary drives of 350hp each for fine handling.
Under ideal conditions, the vessel can reach speeds of just over 29 knots and a range of up to 5,000 nautical miles.
There were approximately 226 personnel on board, including 15 officers and 21 Air Force support personnel. Installed systems include AN/SPS-49 air search radar, AN/SPS-55 surface search radar and AN/SQS-56 sonar. The AN/SLQ-32 kit is used in electronic warfare (EW) roles. The mounted weapon is guided by a single Mk 13 Mod 4 launcher for the forecastle-mounted anti-ship missile "Harpoon". There is an OTO-Melara Mk. caliber 76 mm /62.
The hull superstructure (near midship) houses 75 turrets, while a 20mm "Phalanx" digital close-in weapons system (CIWS) and up to 4 x 12.7mm machine guns (HMG) protect the ship as a last line of defense. defend. The ship also carries 2 x 324 mm Mk.
32 triple torpedo tubes, providing equal lethality to surface and underwater vessel attacks for the Mark 46 torpedo series.
The air force on the ship consists of a Navy helicopter Sikorsky S-70 or Agusta-Bell AB212 or similar, which is launched and lifted off from the stern helipad. A full-service hangar is attached to the area, allowing for repairs and general maintenance at sea - technically, the ship can carry two of these helicopters.
The full profile of the boat includes a raised forecastle and stepped stern section. The main mass of the hull structure is concentrated in the center, including the bridge section, the main and sub-masts (lattice) and the hangar section.
Machine gun armament is located around the hull superstructure (including on the bridge), and the automatic cannon with turret has an excellent angle above the vehicle.
