History of USS Flint (AR-32 / T-AE-32)

On 20 November 1971, the Kilauea-class ammunition/cargo supply ship USS FLINT (AE-32) was commissioned. She was the last of her class of eight and was discharged from the U.S. Navy in 1995 and immediately transferred to Military Sealift Command as a T-AE-32. In this way, the USS Flint continued to serve with civilian personnel under the command of the Navy, while being responsible for delivering ammunition to fleet warships when needed. U.S.

Navy authorities became interested in logistics as early as 1888, and it was Capt. Alfred Thayer Mahan who introduced the term and concept of resupply in a speech at the Naval War College.

Historically, the need for supplies began once personnel and ships set sail, and the importance of naval logistics continues to play a key role in naval operations today.

For thousands of years, supplies and supply ships at sea have proven elusive. While a regular part of the modern navy, it is still a dangerous and difficult job. In 1803, the British fleet consisted of 871 ships, using 177 transports, many of which were used for supplies. General supplies and war materiel are stored in naval shipyards at the ship's home port, as well as at foreign bases provided by means of transport. In good sea conditions, transport ships can rendezvous with warships at sea to replenish ammunition, cargo, food and water.

On calm seas, transports and warships in need of resupply will simply fight side by side, tying together in the process. A ramp is set up between the two ships, and supplies are passed or loaded onto the cargo net and pulled up on pulleys.

However, when the sea did not compromise, the store was lowered to a waiting ship and transshipped as needed. The barrels would be thrown to the side of the boat (called "floating barrels"), and they would then simply swim to the side of the receiving boat via floats or be propelled forward by the oars. The receiving vessel will then block and dispose of the barrel.

Cargo nets can also be lowered onto the boat to fill with cargo to prevent them from getting wet. There is no doubt that the raw nature of replenishment at sea is a time-consuming process, a last resort in sailing.

If an enemy ship appeared on the horizon, transport and warships would be at a distinct disadvantage and exposed to enemy fire without compensation.

Supplies and the American Civil War

Sail power eventually led to steam propulsion using coal as fuel. Now, this adds to the complexity of refueling ships that burn up to 50 tonnes of coal a day. Large coal-fired ships and "iron" ships must refill their coal tanks every 10 days. Coal supply ships are rapidly designed and built to supply coal stations anchored to receiving ships or friendly shores.

A variation of the process was tried - a vessel towing a coal barge with a streamer was able to slowly transport 500-pound sacks from the coal barge to the ship. Supplies were stored in various corners of the ship, and coal supply depots were set up in Allied fortresses along the coast and upstream.

Supplies during World War I and World War II

The First World War ushered in the era of large gunsteel battleships, prompting many navies to switch from coal to oil. The liquid nature of oil now requires an entirely new concept of offshore replenishment to maintain. For the U.S. Navy, the aircraft carrier Maumee operates as a refueling vessel, and in 1917 the U.S. Navy experimented with the USS Maumee to refuel and resupply ships at sea while underway.

The two ships will move within 50 feet of each other and sail on parallel courses at the same speed. A 10-inch thick line runs from the tanker to the waiting vessel that needs to be replenished, and a 3.5-inch bronze bunker pipe is attached to the derrick from the Maumee to the customer vessel.

The cargo is passed by the outriggers on the tanker, and the whole process takes two hours or more.

During World War II, the British Navy captured two German tankers fitted with rubber pipes, a leap from the copper pipes previously used. As the Pacific War spanned thousands of miles of ocean, its countless campaigns involved logistics, artillery, and aircraft.

Thus, the replenishment in progress (UNREP) proved to be necessary for the US Navy to attempt to remove the Japanese presence from the various island chains. These operations incorporate the concept of "island hopping", in which a series of islands are captured after the previous one is protected. This allows supplies to be shipped to captured ports and forwarded as needed. U.S. submarines were tasked with attacking enemy tankers in order to reduce Japan's supply to its own navy, and these operations were ultimately successful as expected. The U.S. fleet traversed approximately 4,200 miles of the Central Pacific in support of warships, including nearly 3,000 support ships of various types.

Evolving supply needs culminate in offshore repair ships, tugboats, minesweepers, concrete-fueled barges and grocery stores, ammunition lighters, fleet tankers and cargo ships of all sizes.

Supplies during the Korean War

In June 1950, the Korean War (1950-1953) began with the invasion of the South by North Korean communist troops (supported by China and the Soviet Union). After World War II, it was difficult to achieve a sustained supply of combat ships in the Western Pacific as many troops were reduced in number and strength. The large logistical fleet built to support the U.S. Navy's operations in World War II has all but disappeared. At the end of the war, the U.S.

Navy kept many of its ships in reserve and sold or donated hundreds to friendly navies around the world. This left Americans in a generally unprepared position to deal with another distant war that came so quickly after World War II. Any suitable fleet tankers and cargo ships in service need to be combined with the Allied UN warships. Before their arrival, the warships had to retreat to friendly ports in Japan to replenish ammunition and food.

The warships fighting the Chinese invading from the north depleted their ammunition so quickly that supplies were needed every few days, taking the needed warships from the front. When the resupply ships arrived at the space station, they continued to employ the continuous resupply technology that was solidly developed during World War II.

The war ended in an armistice, although a formal peace treaty was never signed.

Refills and Consumables Vietnam

While the Vietnam War had its roots in the postwar and 1950s, the conflict expanded in 1964. Subic Bay became the focus of U.S. Navy Seventh Fleet support activities. Long distances from the United States to Vietnam require new types of supplies, and the increased use of aircraft and helicopters for supplies remains an evolving concept.

As the war intensified, supplies were often in short supply due to a lack of locally trained logistical support staff and poor planning.

Navy supply ships sailed up and down the coast of Vietnam day and night to replenish the fleet. The cargo ship is pulled at the same speed to within 100 feet of the ship that needs to be replenished. Crews will then run cables between them to deliver the goods.

Resupply en route was, is and will be the most efficient way to resupply ships. During the Vietnam War, 99 percent of the logistical support of aircraft carriers and their battle groups, which required ammunition, bombs, missiles, fuel, general supplies, jet fuel, food, and even ice cream, was at sea using combined and vertical replenishment techniques.

In modern times, a new type of supply ship is needed.

Ammo and Supply Ships

The USS Flint (AE-32) was ordered in 1968 during the Vietnam War and was the fifth in the Kilauea cargo ammunition category. The U.S. Navy's ammunition ships are named after sources of ignition, such as volcanoes, or burning implements, such as flint, which, if hit with steel, can create sparks and fires. The Flint was built by the Ingalls nuclear shipbuilding division of Litton Industries, Incorporated in Pascagoula, Mississippi. On August 30, 1971, the U.S.

Navy received the USS Flint upon arrival in Charleston, South Carolina. In 1971, she began sea trials off the east coast. Upon completion, she was sent via the Panama Canal to her first homeport at Naval Weapons Station Concord, California.

Flint is still largely made up of untested major veterans. When built, she was piloted by 28 officers and 375 soldiers. The Vietnam War is intensifying, and Flint needs to be on the station as soon as possible.

As a result, her cargo hold is loaded with 6,000 tons of ammunition, which is further divided for safety and stability - the ship has four holds, divided into 14 magazines. She received seven 100,000-gallon fuel tanks totaling 2,500 tons, divided into jet fuel and marine fuel.

To facilitate loading and unloading, there are seven (CONREP) depots on board. For frozen and fresh food, Flint has two (RAS) refrigerator storage compartments. When fully loaded, she has a surface displacement of approximately 11,900 light tons and 20,500 heavy tons.

As a munitions ship, the main function of the ship is to transport and transport bombs, artillery shells of various calibers, land and sea mines, various rockets, torpedoes and all explosive devices and incendiary devices that may be used by the main fleet . In a secondary role, Flint provides a limited amount of fuel, water, and food supplies to various ships during the voyage. The loading of flint at the Naval Weapons Station in Concord, California, took place on the pier in the port.

Offloading at sea is carried out while driving and in all weather conditions, at any time of the day or night, usually in active combat areas.

Connect Replenishment (CONREP)

Connected resupply remains the preferred method for fuel transport. Cargo, including general supplies, naval cargo or ammunition, was transported to the deck from four cargo holds, which were divided into fourteen magazines below deck by six high-speed elevators.

Vessels can receive fuel from Flint while at sea from any of the four stations on the port or starboard side. The Flint can load and unload ammunition or cargo from itself to a dock or barge using four cargo outriggers - two on port and two on starboard.

All of Flint's seven connected replenishment (CONREP) stations can be set up as a standard tension edge replenishment (STREAM) system. The STREAM system uses a trolley that travels on the high voltage line from the flint to the receiving vessel. Depending on the mission and supply requirements, some or all of the stations on the port and starboard sides can be used simultaneously. With CONREP, one ship can be resupplying in port, while the other can be servicing starboard.

While this resupply is done with two ships at the same time, Flint can still use VERTREP (Vertical Resupply) via helicopter to tow a third or fourth ship.

Vertical Replenishment (VERTREP)

The latest resupply mode is the "vertical" with the Sea Knight (CH-46) tandem rotor transport helicopter, which lifts cargo from the aft flight deck of ships such as the Flint to the cargo net. These cargoes are then delivered to the flight deck of an aircraft carrier or the quarter deck of other surface combatants. Flint has a heavy-duty helicopter flight deck that can handle any U.S. military helicopter as well as allied helicopters in joint operations.

The two helicopters assigned to Flint use UNREP for simultaneous vertical resupply, providing ammunition, supplies, food supplies, mail and personnel as needed. The modern VERTREP adds a new dimension to logistical support capabilities.

Vertical replenishment of helicopters transporting ordnance cargo and combat supplies can support fleet ship units on the horizon from supply ships. This new concept drives the development of resupply to supply the fleet at sea.

USS Flint (AE-32) in service

Flint left the Naval Weapons Station in Concord, California for his first deployment in October 1972 during the Vietnam War (1955-1975). She would unload onto the ship around the Vietnam War Theater and return empty at flank speed to resupply in Concord, California.

Flint traveled to and from Vietnam several times without incident before planning an overhaul to replace working machinery and elevators. From October 1973 to April 1974, her mission was to support fleet shipping in the Western Pacific.

However, air combat in Vietnam intensified, and from December 1974 to June 1975, Flint was again deployed to support the carrier's operations.
