History

Myanmar's strengthened relationship with China has enabled its military to benefit from China's extensive military industry and influence. The Myanmar Navy's newest addition is the UMS Min Ye Kyaw Htin (72), a submarine originally from China's Navy. This submarine type, known as the Type 035B or "Ming-class," is also operated by China and Bangladesh. It was transferred to Myanmar in 2021 and can carry torpedoes and mines, enhancing its versatility for various military purposes.

The UMS Min Ye Kyaw Htin is stationed at Ownchein Island and complements another submarine, the UMS Min Ye Theinkhathu (71), added in 2020. Together with surface vessels like frigates and missile boats, these submarines grant Myanmar's Navy a strategic advantage. The UMS Min Ye Kyaw Htin, part of the Type 035 family, boasts upgraded cruise missiles that can be launched from torpedo tubes, expanding its target range and effectiveness. Powered by a diesel-electric engine, the submarine reaches speeds of 18 knots underwater, with dimensions of 249 feet in length, 25 feet in width, and a draft of 17 feet.

Crewed by approximately 57 personnel and armed with forward and aft torpedo tubes, the UMS Min Ye Kyaw Htin significantly enhances Myanmar's maritime capabilities.
