History of USS Shangri-La (CV-38)
USS Shangri-La (CV/CVA/CVS-38) was a fleet of 24 Essex ships that served during or shortly after World War II One of the Class II aircraft carriers was done for the US Navy.
Introduced in 1944, the Shangri-La, named after the mythical paradise of the same name, participated in numerous battles in the Pacific Theater during World War II and was awarded two Battle Stars. Like many of her sister ships, she was decommissioned shortly after the war, but was modernized and returned to service in the early 1950s and redesignated as a strike carrier (CVA).
She spent several years in the Pacific and Atlantic/Mediterranean regions and was redesignated as an anti-submarine carrier (CVS) later in her career. She received three Battle Stars for her service in the Vietnam War.
Shangri-La was retired in 1971 and scrapped in 1988.
