History of USS Bunker Hill (CG-52)

As a Cold War veteran, USS Bunker Hill (CG-52) remains an important part of the US Navy's surface fleet. She belongs to the famous Ticonderoga-class battleship series with a total of 27 hulls, 21 of which are still in service (2022).

These types are classified as guided missile cruisers and are the largest hull size and displacement of conventional surface ammunition behind an aircraft carrier. The class was constructed from 1980 to 1994 and commissioned in 1983.

Due to her role in U.S. Navy history, USS Bunker Hill was ordered by Ingalls Shipbuilding on January 15, 1982 and launched on January 11, 1984. Her hull was launched on March 11, 1985, and commissioned on September 20, 1986.

Fighting under the slogan "Determination, Deterrence", she was nicknamed "Bravo" and served at sea at age 7. E awards are awarded.

The warship is equipped with 4 GE LM2500 gas turbines driving 2 stern shafts. This traditional arrangement gives the vessel a top speed of 32.5 knots in ideal conditions and a range of 6,000 nautical miles at 20 knots.

Dimensions include 567ft barrel length, 55ft beam and 34ft draft.

There were 30 officers and about 300 men on board. The ship is equipped with AN/SPY-1A/B multi-function radar, AN/SPS-49 air search radar and AN/SPS-73 surface search radar. Active and passive sonars are considered in the design and are packaged in the AN/SQQ-89(V)1/3 - A(V)15 Series Sonar Kit.

Armament includes a mix of ballistic and missile weapons. The former has 2 x 5" deck guns and turrets (one in tandem), supported by 2 x 25mm autocannons and 2 x 20mm Phalanx Close Combat Weapon Systems (CIWSs). Ultimate point defense consists of 2 to 4 x 12.7mm Brownings Machine gun control. At the heart of the kit, however, is the 61-unit Vertical Launch System (VLS), which can accommodate a mix of surface-to-air missile (SAM) and Tomahawk land attack cruise missile solutionsgiving warships extremely high visibility out of sight survivability.

It can also participate in amphibious support operations through its surface attack missiles against inland targets that are relatively safe from the ocean. The 2 x 324 mm Mk 32 triple torpedo tubes give the ship the ability to fight enemy submarines and surface warships Capability.

In addition, 2 x 4 cell "Harpoon" rocket launchers are mounted in the stern for anti-ship operations.

In addition, two Sikorsky Seahawk helicopters are used for anti-submarine warfare (ASW) missions. These can also be used for anti-ship operations and search and rescue (SAR) operations if desired. Full service flight deck and hangar.

Unlike modern warships, the flight deck and hangar on Bunker Hill are located forward of the stern area.
