Progress IV

History

Progress IV was a commercial cargo ship operating in the Black Sea. On 27 August 2026, the vessel was struck or otherwise damaged, caught fire, and subsequently sank near the Romanian coast.

The incident occurred approximately 20 nautical miles southeast of Sfantu Gheorghe, near the mouth of the Danube and close to a maritime corridor used by commercial traffic from Ukraine. Romanian authorities investigated several possible causes, including a drone strike, contact with a drifting mine, and an internal explosion or fire aboard the ship.

All 12 crew members aboard Progress IV were rescued. The sinking occurred during stormy conditions, with waves reported to reach approximately 2.5 m.

Loss of Progress IV

According to Romanian President Nicusor Dan, the vessel had been struck, but authorities had not established who or what caused the damage. The acting Romanian defence minister said the crew reported through an alert system that the ship had been damaged by some type of drone. He stressed that this was information provided by the crew and that the cause remained under investigation.

The Romanian Maritime Authority also considered an explosion or spontaneous fire in the engine room or cargo hold as possible explanations. Crew members reported hearing a sharp sound resembling an explosion or heavy impact before the fire began. The captain then transmitted an SOS signal and ordered the crew to abandon the vessel.

Romanian media reported that unidentified airborne targets had been detected by radar near Snake Island on 26 and 27 August. NATO F-18 fighters were launched to intercept them, but no direct connection between those detections and the loss of Progress IV had been established.

Operational history

Progress IV was used for commercial cargo transport in the Black Sea. A photograph cited in the source showed the vessel in June 2026, confirming that it was physically in service before its loss later that year.

After the sinking, Romanian authorities planned to send diving vessels and hydrographic craft to the wreck site. The planned inspection was intended to examine the seabed, determine the nature of the hull damage, and assess the risk of a possible fuel leak.

Loss and investigation

The available information did not establish a definitive cause for the sinking. A drone strike was one of the possibilities considered because of the crew report, but Romanian officials also examined the possibility of a drifting mine or an internal explosion or fire.
