History of Accuracy International AX (series)

The Accuracy International AX series of rifles is a line of tactical weapons that currently (2018) includes "AX308" and "AXMC". The AX308 is housed in a .308 Winchester, while the AXMC has a .338 Lapua Magnum cartridge, but can be reconfigured to fire a .300 Winchester Magnum or a .308 Winchester round at the same time. This requires appropriate modifications to the barrel, bolt and magazine.

The "AX50" is another AX model sold by Accuracy International with a huge .50 BMG machine gun cartridge - suitable for anti-tank/fortification/crew work.

The

AX rifle has a traditional structural layout, but is a thoroughly modern battlefield weapon. A dual chamber muzzle brake fitted as standard is located at the end of the weapon to reduce recoil. A threaded tactical version of the same brake assembly can add a silencer to the rifle for stealth work. The heavily perforated octagonal front cover features an integrated quick release designed to accept auxiliary rail attachment points to support tactical accessories such as foldable bipods and sling mounts. The assembly supports all standard STANAG 4694/MIL-STD-1913 rail sections, and these sections can be mounted to perforations along the length of the patented "KeySlot" panel system.

Above the weapon is a continuous section of Picatinny rail, machined to a solid, corrosion-resistant aluminum standard, that accommodates a variety of scopes and sights, including night vision (NV) and thermal imaging cameras. There are multiple bridle points that are flush and quick release.

The barrel assembly is also equipped with a quick change function with the tool installed in the cheek assembly (4mm hex key). When transporting such a fairly long weapon, disassembly is useful - especially before long marches. The height and lateral position of the cheek plate itself are adjustable to better serve the shooter.

The butt pad also has an adjustable mass that can change its height and angle. The shoulder rest hinges on the right side of the receiver and folds over the exposed bolt handle, shortening the rifle by approximately 10 inches for improved portability.

The weapon is fed from a simple detachable ten-round magazine mounted in front of the trigger group. Featuring a dual-stacked, spring-loaded cartridge layout, the assembly is constructed from corrosion-resistant steel to provide inherent reliability in the field under combat conditions and general military abuse.

The trigger assembly is a two-stage design with an adjustable shoe assembly to customize the action. Three safety mechanisms ensure maximum protection for the operator and those in the vicinity.

The pistol grip is ergonomically shaped but can also be quickly and easily retrofitted with the pistol grip accessory.

The overall base weight of the weapon (with the 27" long barrel installed) is 15 lbs and is manageable. Current (2018) exterior finishes include Deep Earth, Green, Light Brown, Elite Sand and Elite Midnight. [/p ]
