Akdal MKA 1919

History

Turkey's Akdal Arms seems to have simply copied the famous American Colt M16 assault rifle - its role on the battlefield has been transformed into a semi-automatic combat shotgun. The MKA 1919 was developed in 2006 and production started in 2007. Fulfilling the melee role of the modern Turkish Army, it fires a 12-gauge grenade through a pneumatic semi-automatic breech, while being carried by a detachable 5-round curved box magazine.

It has an effective range of up to 50 yards, an overall weight of 7.2 pounds, an overall length of 38 inches, and a barrel length of 19 inches.

The MKA 1919 is definitely very similar to the M16, save for some external differences. The shoulder rest is attached to the rear of the receiver, and the recognizable carrying handle (with integrated diopter sight) is located above the receiver (along part of the Picatinny rail). The pistol grip is attached under the weapon near the trigger area, and the magazine is just in front of the trigger assembly. The main changes to the base system include the installation of a support tube, which is added below the barrel assembly, and also includes a return spring.

The bolt release is just like the M16 and the gun is equally charged before firing. The manual safety is very similar in design to the M16 and is located on the left side of the receiver near the pistol grip.

If desired, the carrying handle (and its diopter sighting mechanism) can be replaced with any other supported accessory.
