History of the ArmaLite AR-50
The
Anti-Material Rifle (AMR) rifle is an upcoming rifle that is available in many different flavors according to customer needs. In the late 1990s, ArmaLite set out to develop a new .50 caliber system called the "AR-50".
The weapon is based on a manually operated bolt action system that uses either . 50 BMG or . 416 Barrett cartridges. It has been in production since 1999.
The AR-50 weighed 34 pounds and had many of the features typically associated with weapons of this caliber: a long, sturdy barrel assembly, receiver-mounted optics, and a front-end bipod assembly. Overall length is 59.5 inches. The exterior design is stylish with many thin lines running horizontally. The locking lever is located on the right side of the gun, favoring right-handed shooters. The trigger unit is traditionally located under the housing.
Cutout shoulder rests help reduce recoil and provide butt- and cheek-like comfort. On the business end of the barrel is a large multi-baffle brake that also helps with recoil. The barrel is internally rifled at 1:15 for right-hand use and has an octagonal shape.
A monopod is mounted under the shoulder rest as an additional point of support. The optics are mounted above the receiver in the usual way, but the Picatinny rail system allows the user to customize the optics.
Under the AR-50 product name, there are three main variants of the basic design: the AR-50A1B is the standard product (an upgraded version of the original AR-50A1) for the . 50 BMG. AR-50-A1BNM in . 50 BMG. AR-50-A1B-416 is used for the above. 416 Barrett Cartridge. Augmented Reality.
The 30 is a smaller sized version of the AR-50, chambered for smaller caliber rifle cartridges such as the .308 Winchester and .338 Lapua Magnum.
. 416 as . 50 BMG and was introduced in 2005 at the request of the Crane Division of the US Naval Surface Warfare Center. It is much shorter than its cousin, the BMG.
AR-50 in circulation in the US and Malaysia. In the latter, it served with Pascal special forces.
