History of the Barrett XM109 OSW (target sniper weapon)

The American Barrett Firearms Company expanded the original Barrett M82/M107 line of anti-materiel rifles with the introduction of the XM109 model. Designed to fire a 25x59mm "smart" grenade, the weapon was the focal point of General Dynamics' now-discontinued XM307 grenade launcher weapon (detailed elsewhere on this site). The XM109 features the lower receiver of the classic M82/M107 anti-material rifle and a new upper receiver element.

This allows the XM109 to be "rebuilt" and used in a traditional anti-material rifle role. The XM109 relies on a proven short recoil semi-automatic action and is fed from a detachable 5-round magazine.

It features a traditional rifle-style arrangement - stock, pistol grip, magazine and front guard/handguard.

The XM109 was once known as the Targeted Sniper Weapon (OSW).

The total weight of the XM109 is just over 33 lbs, with a barrel length of 46 inches and a barrel length of 17.6 inches. The shoulder rest is skeletal, which reduces the overall weight. The muzzle contained a massive vertically slotted brake to deal with the violent recoil effect of firing such a large caliber projectile.

On top of the weapon is a long piece of Picatinny rail to which various optics can be attached. A foldable (optional) bipod mounts under the front baffle/handguard in front of the magazine well, and the carrying handle facilitates transport of weapons on the march.

On the right side of the gun body is a large magazine for ejecting a large case of a 25mm grenade.

Like the M84/M107 series rifles, the XM109 is primarily used to defeat lightly armored vehicles and engage personnel behind lightly reinforced bunkers at a distance. The shell aspect of the cartridge adds unique capabilities that typical anti-materiel rifles lack because the shells can carry different warhead loads. The Ballistic BORS computer supports the "smart" aspect of in-game shells.

As a complete package, the XM109 is designed to provide a longer range than the original Barrett rifle, but in a more compact, portable package.

The currently known operator of the XM109 is the Ukrainian Army.
