History of the Barrett M107
The Barrett M107 was originally the Barrett M95 bolt-action sniper rifle (US Army designation "XM107"). The weapon was put into competition by the U.S. Army for review. During the competition, the U.S.
Army assessed its needs for large-caliber sniper rifles and decided not to go with the XM107 design, instead focusing the $107 they had already invested in the purchase of the proven Barrett M82 series semi-automatic recoil rifle. As such, these M82 systems were named "M107", which otherwise simply represented a slightly different version of the excellent Barrett design.
Therefore, it is similar to the 0.50 caliber 12.7x99mm Browning NATO machine gun cartridge (50 Browning / , 50 BMG) firing from a semi-automatic system with a rotating bolt function.
The M107 Anti-Material Rifle was adopted by the U.S. Army, similar to the U.S. Marine Corps M82A1 Barrett. 50 caliber sniper system. The M107 allows Army snipers to accurately engage material targets (and in extreme cases personnel) at a range of 1500-2000 yards.
The weapon is designed to effectively strike and destroy physical targets such as aircraft (parked), communications targets, computers, intelligence sites, radar sites, ammunition depots, fuel depots, and lightly armored vehicles.
As a counter sniper, the M107 system provides long range and increased ultimate impact on snipers using small caliber weapons. The complete system includes the rifle itself, a ten-round detachable magazine, a variable power optical sight, a hard carrying case, a tactical soft case, cleaning and maintenance equipment, a detachable sling, adjustable bipod and Operator/Maintenance Instructions.
The Army plans to improve future M107s by adding mufflers to greatly reduce flash, noise, and blast characteristics. A standard M107 is used with a Leupold 4.5x14 Vari-X oscilloscope.
The official designation for this weapon is "Long Range Sniper Rifle, .50 caliber, M107".
