Beretta APX History

The APX is a relatively new addition to the firing pin-fired semi-automatic pistol market from renowned Italian gun manufacturer Beretta. Launched in 2016, the weapon includes a range of related semi-automatic pistols, including the Compact and Centurion models.

Aggressive, bold styling is at the heart of APX styling, recognized as a dependable, comfortable and balanced weapon.

The weapon's initial development focus was on participation in the U.S. Army's XM17 "Modular Pistol System" program - won by Sig-Sauer and their P320 (detailed elsewhere on this site) - as a replacement to serve their aging stockpile of shells Reta M9.

APX offers two main chambers: 9mm and .40 switch. Both are bolt-fired products with an overall length of 190mm, and depending on the model, the barrel assembly is 108mm. Depending on the frame type and chamber, the weapon series can be numbered with 10, 15, 17 or 21 rounds.

Its structural arrangement is typical of the type with heavily serrated sliding parts for easy gripping. The slider covers the length of the barrel as well as the firing movement, and an iron sight (three-point type) is installed in the front and rear.

The eject port is on the right side of the frame. The trigger assembly is located in the center of the weapon and features a sturdy oversized trigger ring and easy-to-reach controls such as reversible magazine releases and ambidextrous bolt stops. The magazine (with a specially designed oversized plate for easy handling) is inserted into the grip base in the usual way, and the grip itself is ergonomically designed for a firm hold (the straps are interchangeable).

Below the muzzle is a small section of Picatinny rail for mounting sights, flashlights, etc. The removal lever can be seen along the left side of the frame. The lower part of the frame is modular and can be changed according to the operator's taste and needs.

The weapon houses a strike deactivator internally, has a tiltable barrel, locked breech and short recoil, and is largely based on the Browning method. When the shooting chamber is loaded, a physical indicator can be seen on the rear of the frame to assist the shooter.

Drop protection is built into the design to prevent the weapon from firing if accidentally dropped.

The current (2018) APX range includes the base models APX Full Size, APX Compact, APX Centurion, APX RDO, APX Combat, APX FDE and APX FDE Special package.

The compact is of course a shortened, smaller-sized ultra-compact with an overall lighter weight and better carry/hide quality, typically 9mm and .40 S&W chambers. The number of magazines varies, 13+1 for the 9mm model and 10+1 for the .0 model. 40 switches. The Centurion is another concealed carry (compact) model that is slightly larger in size and weight. Magazine count increased to 9mm and 15+1 and 13+1 40 S & W chambers.

The APX RDO integrates a Red Dot Optical (RDO) system above the receiver for accurate long-range shooting and has the powerful features of the APX series as a whole. The APX Combat has the same RDO support, but with a threaded barrel for mounting the silencer.

The APX FDE is a full-size weapon built for the military and law enforcement. The APX FDE special package is another extension to this model.
