Colt M4 History
The M4/M4A Carbine is a compact, lightweight, gas-operated, air-cooled, magazine-fed 5.56mm selective fire weapon system that can be aimed from the shoulder. The M4/M4A Carbine is the latest weapon in a family of firearms dating back to the M16 and even the AR-15 Carbine. It is a shorter and lighter version of the M16 assault rifle, 80% of the parts are parallel.
The M4 is 1.3 pounds lighter, 6.58 inches longer and 10 inches shorter, and the stock collapses. This comparable ability to replace parts also reduces the need for training and maintenance.
The M4 has selective fire options, including the semi-automatic and triple-round bursts available in the M16A2. Instead of three bursts, the M4A1 has a fully automatic option.
The conflicts in Panama and Somalia require soldiers to fight in cities and close quarters, and a new weapon. This Close Combat (CQC) is the driving force behind the M4, which features a collapsible stock and short barrel for accurate and deadly firepower to hit targets at longer distances. Like many carbines, the M4 is more portable and more comfortable to carry than a full-length rifle. The Army will also use the weapon for non-infantry and staff members who are no longer armed.
It is also favored by airborne forces and special operations groups that require an effective range of up to 600 meters.
Variants of the M16 Assault Rifle, M4 Carbine and M4A1 Carbine can be equipped with accessories, night vision goggles, laser spot optics, scopes and bipods. M203 or M320 grenade launchers can be attached to the M4 top rail. Additional accessories include the AN/PEQ-2, Advanced Combat Optical Sight (ACOG) and M68 Aimpoint with EOTech Holographic Weapon Sight. Visible and infrared (infrared) lights can be attached using a variety of mounting methods.
The M4 is trained with the Blind Shooting Attachment (BFA).
However, with the introduction of the M4, things were not good in the military world. Equally detrimental is the power of being a member of the M16 family. 1969 in Ft. The disadvantage of the M16 became apparent when I was in Army Basic Training in California.
The training sergeant threw a handful of M14s and a handful of M16s into a prepared mud puddle, and after stepping on more dirt, he picked up the M14 and kept firing. He then took the M16 and pulled the jammed gun on the first trigger without firing a shot.
This lesson should never be forgotten, constant cleaning of the M16 is a must for survival.
In a U.S. Army test in clear weather and sandstorm conditions comparing the M4 to 3 competitors, the M4 came in last with 3.5 times more jams than any other test. Other criticisms of the carbine included the lower muzzle velocity, which produced a louder blast due to the short barrel. Parts are under more stress, and the M4 tends to overheat faster than the M16A2.
With the agreed-upon flaws, the U.S. government purchased the M4 for use in all branches, including the National Guard. The Army made improvements to the M4, and Colt agreed to make changes in the future to address future issues. Cold-forged barrels extend service life, and retooled reliable magazines reduce interruptions.
The 2006 test, which included 10 new M16s and 10 new M4s, fired around 5,000 rounds between stops, a notable improvement.
The M4 carbine has been in active combat action in Afghanistan since 2001 and was used by the US military in Iraq after the 2003 invasion of Iraq.
