History of the Kalashnikov AK-102

The AK-102 weapon system exists as a carbine form of the full-length AK-101 assault rifle. The AK-101 was developed by renowned firearms manufacturer Mikhail Kalashnikov specifically for export customers who prefer to use the standard 5.56x45mm NATO cartridge but are interested in the durable heritage of the original AK-47. Thus, the modernized AK-101 was born from combining the proven concepts of the original AK-47 series with today's composite construction techniques (combining plastics and polymers) to create a lighter automatic rifle platform. The AK-102 borrowed heavily from the AK-101 and existed in a shorter, lighter form to complement those infantry units that needed more compact firepower and lighter operating weight.

Production of the AK-102 will be carried out at the Izhmash plant in Izhevsk, Russia.

With an empty weight of 6.6 pounds, the AK-102 has an overall appearance similar to its longer AK-101 cousin, which itself is a modern-looking copy of the AK-47. Its lengths are listed as 32.4 inches (stock fully extended) and 23.1 inches (stock folded and locked to the side of the receiver). This supply includes a spot cleaning kit. The shorter barrel length is 314 mm (12.36 in).

The carbine comes with adjustable sights, but an optical plate can be mounted on the receiver to accommodate different optical sights as needed.

Like the AK-101 before it, the firing action of the AK-102 revolves around a pneumatic rotating bolt system. It is fed by a detachable 30-round fiberglass magazine. The rate of fire was specified at 600 rounds per minute, and the muzzle velocity was 2,789 feet per second.

The maximum range is 500 meters.

The AK-102 is currently in service with some armed forces that have benefited from the basic AK-101 family.
