History of the Kalashnikov SVK
During the 2016 Russian Army Exhibition, the Kalashnikov Group (Rostec) launched several high-profile products, including a new miniature assault rifle (Kalashnikov MA), light machine gun (RPK-16) and SVK semi-automatic Sniper system. The latter is designed to replace the aging line of Soviet-era Dragunov SVD rifles and, depending on the chamber, can fire both the west-facing 7.62x51mm NATO rifle cartridge and the Soviet 7.62x54R rifle cartridge.
With its semi-automatic firing mechanism, the system fulfills the Designated Marksman Rifle (DMR) role in many modern armed forces.
SVK is characterized by the extensive use of polymers for lighter results. Parts of the Picatinny rail are located on the receiver and front end to support various optical assemblies and traditional foldable bipod assemblies. The barrel can be secured with a silencer for covert operations. The magazine is in the traditional position directly in front of the trigger group and can hold detachable magazines of 10, 15 or 20 rounds (including SVD 7. 62x54R models).
The weapon is fired from a proven short stroke gas piston unit with a rotating bolt action breech. The gas system can be customized to the user's preferences.
In addition, ambidextrous controls are provided for left- and right-handed users, as well as a side-folding stock for a more compact footprint.
From the end of 2016/early 2017, the SVK will enter the factory testing phase.
