Colt M4A1 SOPMOD History
The M4A1 SOPMOD is a derivative of the US base M4 carbine. The M4 carbine itself is a compact version of the ubiquitous M16 assault rifle of the 1950s and 1960s, primarily used for close-quarter precision combat in urban warfare environments.
The SOPMOD name stands for Special OPerations Peculiar MODification, and it is an attachment system designed to customize a base M4 carbine in the field using inexpensive off-the-shelf components. The SOPMOD program was initialized by the original SOPMOD Block I kit, which later evolved into the SOPMOD Block II product.
The SOPMOD initiative was born in the late 1980s through the Modular Melee Carbine project. As the name suggests, the goal of this project is to customize weapons by introducing supported non-standard output elements.
The program gained momentum in the early 1990s until full implementation in 1993 under the Naval Surface Warfare Center Crane Division (NSWC Crane).
Beginning with SOPMOD Block I, the M4 carbine can be modified by installing a rail interface system along the various receivers and gauntlets of the M4A1 (in some cases, the M16-style carrying handle has been removed). This allows the operator to install different components depending on the task parameters.
The kit includes the required rail mount system, night vision goggle mount, combat-oriented sling ring, ECOS-N optical sight, Trijicon 4 x 32mm premium combat optical sight, Knight Arms Iron Sight Assembly and Knight Arms company vertical grip.
In addition, this kit also includes components to easily modify three additional M4 carbines in the Assault Squad by installing Knights Armament Company suppressors (2), Trijicon reflex sights, Insight Technology visible light illuminators and Insight Technology AN/ . PEQ-2 infrared laser sight. In addition to these accessories, the kit includes individual examples of various M203 40mm grenade launcher supports - the M203 barrel assembly itself, the necessary accessory system for attaching the barrel under the handguard, the M203 sighting system, AN/PEQ- 5 series laser sight, a pair of night vision goggles and a carrying case.
Overall, the SOPMOD rules expand the tactical capabilities of the base M4 carbine series. This proved to be a remarkable quality in many deployments in Iraq during the height of the U.S. engagement after the 2003 invasion. With the right equipment, operators can raid houses during the day or in low light conditions to engage enemy fighters at close range with the required precision.
The compactness of the M4 Carbine is also a huge advantage, and its qualities can only be enhanced by the modular nature of the M4 design of the SOPMOD kit. Assault squads can also share unused parts of their equipment with other squads to form custom weapons as needed.
Over time, other non-standard accessories were added to the system, including shotgun mounts and cheek plates.
The SOPMOD Block I kit eventually evolved into the more modern Block II kit product. This resulted in different optics, lighting, sights, etc. to further enhance the M4A1 carbine SOPMOD line.
The SOPMOD kit is also compatible with the US SOCOM operated Fabrique-Nationale FN SCAR Mk 16 and Mk 17 assault weapons, bringing the same wide range of tactical flexibility to the series. The SCAR series represents the most advanced modular automatic weapon system product, deployed by the U.S. military in limited numbers, in an attempt to replace the M4 carbine as the U.S. military's standard carbine.
