Colt Model 1862 Pocket Naval History

The success of the original Colt Model 1851 Navy (215,000 sold) laid the foundation for the Model 1862 Pocket Navy percussion revolver. The 1862 Pocket Navy model appears to be smaller in size, with a barrel length of 4.5, 5.5 or 6.5 depending on customer requirements.

Unlike the larger Model 1851, the Model 1862 has a cartridge designed for .36. Colt Patent Firearms of Hartford, Connecticut made only 19,000 of these examples.

Although its official designation includes "Navy", the Model 1862 Pocket Navy received its common designation from the Colt standard. The 36-count revolver is derived from the original 1851 Navy model with a naval battle engraved on both sides of the barrel.

However, the Model 1862 features a sculpted stagecoach robbery scene.

In terms of design, the Colt Model 1862 Pocket Navy is no different from its predecessor. It has an octagonal barrel with a collapsible reload lever underneath. The curved trigger is protected by an elongated brass trigger guard. The hammer is clearly visible and can be operated with the thumb on the back of the frame. The frame itself lacks the solid bridges on the cartridges found in the popular competing Remington.

The pistol grip is elegantly curved and flared at the bottom.

Colt-standard sturdy weapon, now a rare item due to low availability. The original Model 1851 Navy was undoubtedly helped by sales during the American Civil War. Both sides of the conflict used the new Colt Model 1862 Pocket Navy.

The Colt Model 1862 Pocket Navy shares a serial number with the Colt Model 1862 Police revolver, resulting in a high serial number for the latter despite its actual production number.
