History
The Model 1795 is a single-shot, smoothbore, flintlock-based rifle, the first weapon system of its kind made in the United States. She uncovered some notable and important American conflicts of her time, including the 1812 War between the United States and the British Empire, the Mexican War, and the Civil War. She was also taken by members of the American expedition led by Lewis and Clark between 1803 and 1806.
The use of the Model 1795 was not recorded until 1865, as they were still deployed by Confederate troops during the American Civil War.
French influence
The development of the Model 1795 stemmed from the strong American reliance on the British-made Model 1763/66 Charleville rifle during the American Revolutionary War. The aptly named Type 1763 was introduced in 1763, followed by the improved Type 1766.
The gun was made by the Charleville arsenal in the Champagne-Ardennes region.
When the American colonies rebelled against their British masters, France's historical natural enemy, the French government rejoiced at the opportunity to help the colonies. Promise thousands of weapons, ammunition and supplies, often through questionable political means (note that at this time France itself is not at war directly or openly with the British Empire, so steps must be taken to ensure this status quo).
Fake companies were set up, ship logs were faked, and US couriers were planned to be used for direct sales. The Charleville Model 1766 musket is one of the most famous - and will be available in large quantities soon. Availability of the Charleville Model 1766 (which accounted for a large portion of the U.S.
Armory during the 1776 Revolution) soon led to its use by thousands of American rebels, and the country's exposure to the rifle led to its natural use being selected as the new The Beginning of the American Rifle - Model 1795.
Model 1795
In 1776, a small gun depot was established near Springfield, Massachusetts, with about 40 workers making about 245 firearms in its first year of operation. The facility was officially recognized as the National Armory by the U.S. Congress in 1794 and became known as the fabled "Springfield Armory" - the first named armory in the United States. Their first production rifle became the new "Model 1795", and the agency would supply around 80,000 examples in total. The upcoming "Harpers Ferry" armory in eastern West Virginia added to total production from 1801 and was responsible for an additional 70,000 examples.
From 1795 to 1818, muskets of all shapes and forms and by all manufacturers. With so much demand for muskets, the production of this weapon often lags far behind meeting its needs, but both armouries still play an important role in the final "arming America".
Model 1795 walking
The Model 1795 has a typical elongated rifle design, primarily a long smoothbore metal barrel mounted in a wooden frame. The wooden body of the weapon forms the front handle, the case with all the necessary functions and furniture, and the butt with a slightly integrated pistol grip.
It's a three-strap design with two padded shoulder strap loops, one in front of the trigger guard and one under the second strap. The push rod is fixed under the front end of the barrel, and the operator loads the rifle from the muzzle.
The shooting function is traditionally located on the right side of the fuselage and consists of a pulling arm that holds the flint and an arm that is held above the flash disk. The trigger is fixed under the main part of the body and is protected by an elongated trigger ring.

Basics of flintlock action
The flintlock firing action requires the use of sharp flint. The flint was held in adjustable clips at the top of the pulling arm, and the whole device (called a "rooster" because of its resemblance to a bird's beak) hinged at its base to swing. The hammer was set to "half-bang" and the gun was loaded by the operator. Black powder drips down the barrel, followed by the bullet (or ball), usually wrapped in cloth to keep it from moving in the barrel. Everything has been "rammed" with push rods to ensure proper placement.
The glitter disc is primed with finely ground powder and its "curl" or lid is closed. The cock is now pulled back to "full cock" and the safety lock is released. When the trigger is pulled, the puller arm disengages and allows it to scrape the steel battery, briefly opening the flash disk containing the main charge. The rain of sparks produced by the flint pair curls is collected in a flash disk and ignites the ignition charge.
This powder flashes its way into the main combustion chamber through a contact hole, igniting the gunpowder in the barrel. The explosive powder then forces the bullet through the only open channel - the muzzle end of the barrel.
Finally, the paper tube is added to the mix, the powder charge and balls are packed in a convenient paper envelope, which actually reduces the number of steps required to some extent.
This method of firing replaced the complex system of wheel locks, dog locks and matchlocks and remained the method of choice for gun manufacturers for the next 200 years, until it itself was replaced by primer.
Accuracy
The Model 1795 weighed approximately 10 pounds, was 60 inches long (extended by a 16-inch bayonet), and had a barrel length of between 42 inches and 45 inches. Long barrels are essential for this smoothbore weapon system because they can achieve a certain level of accuracy. Essentially the .69 musket ball travels a distance inside the smooth barrel, spinning in all directions before exiting the barrel. At least the barrel helped fire a fairly restrained trajectory. However, once the ball leaves the muzzle, it is prone to many unexpected "breaks" in flight, hence the inherent inaccuracy of such a system.
It wasn't until the "split" barrel became a proven replacement that smoothbore guns were more or less finally retired.
Like other muskets, the Model 1795 lacks high accuracy on targets beyond 100 yards. In fact, many muskets are truly accurate to 50 to 75 yards or less. As a result, armies often use centralized "muskets" (rather than riflemen) to boost these numbers.
The Type 1795 reports an effective range of up to 200 yards, but this will likely require optimal conditions, a trained eye, a steady hand, and a stationary target of a certain size. Still, the American Type 1795 used smaller bullets than the British. 75.
This generally gave the Americans a distinct advantage in range and accuracy over the British and their Brown Bass rifles, especially in the War of 1812.
The Musketeer
A trained operator can release approximately 2 or 3 musket rounds per minute. Professionally trained personnel can reload in about 15 seconds. Considering the lengthy action of the reloading process itself and the fact that reloading is often carried out under enemy fire, this is a respectable speed (by modern standards). Armies usually line their muskets in formations at least a few rows deepusually threewith kneeling in the front. This allows all members of the formation to fire on the enemy, increasing accuracy and focusing fire on the target area, while maintaining the third stage with ready-to-fire muskets, giving the front stage a chance to reload.
The British Army pioneered the use of only two rows in depth and developed their method of 'fire discharge' to ensure consistent and focused fire on the enemy at all times.
Bayonet
The bayonet was developed to replace the use of pikemen on the battlefield. The pikemen served the formations well, protecting them from the charge of the vanguard cavalry. Once the bayonet is attached to the musket, the pikeman is essentially an illusion of history.
In addition to protecting the formation from cavalry charges, the bayonet can also charge "complete" enemy formations in a subsequent bayonet charge. Enemy formations had to be "disintegrated" with muskets before the cavalry was unleashed to deliver the final fatal blow.
A bayonet mounted on the end of the musket allows such action while keeping the operator a safe distance from his prey. The Model 1795 used a typical bayonet lug, which allowed the instrument to fit around the muzzle - the result was a rather long weapon, somewhat unsuitable for hand-to-hand combat.
Model 1795 in Civil War
During the American Civil War, the Confederates converted the Model 1795 to a shock-based fire system whenever possible. However, limited resources often meant that many of the Model 1795s used in conflicts still operated in the old flintlock fashion.
In any case, this means that the Model 1795 has been in service for about 70 years since its introduction.
