Heckler & Koch HK MP5K (Kurz)

History

Heckler & Koch HK MP5K ("K" = "Kurz" meaning "short") is designed to meet the needs of special forces, law enforcement and security personnel who require a A compact concealed firearm needs man-stopping qualities. So Germany's attention developed the MP5K from its large submachine guns (the ubiquitous HK MP5 series), which later became one of the most famous submachine guns of the Cold War and is still widely used today.

The HK MP5K was introduced by the company in 1991.

The design of the MP5K is clearly a Heckler & Koch design, with strong, clean lines and the requisite black finish. The weapon has a deep receiver that contains the necessary internal components and a shortened front end that accommodates the barrel assembly. The pistol grip and trigger assembly are integrated into one unit, and the easy-to-read fire selector switch is located above the thumb area. There are three ignition modes - safety, semi-automatic and full-automatic, denoted "S", "E" and "F", which can be activated with a flick of the selector lever. The MP5K has an optional foldable shoulder rest to keep it compact while still providing traditional "three-point" support when needed.

Additionally, a front vertical rubber grip was added in front of the magazine due to the absence of a handguard. The magazine accepts the typical curved HK magazine using the 15x9x19mm Parabellum cartridge (the more traditional 30-round magazine can be substituted if desired). Attached to the rear of the receiver is a drum-shaped iron sight with a hooded front post above the muzzle. Internally, the HK MP5K is largely a replica of the full-size MP5 submachine gun that came before it. In order to keep the design compact, the barrel, handle, slide, receiver and main magazine (15 rounds) have all been shortened, although the HK MP5's receiver, although long, can accommodate various optical mounts.

However, the lack of a protruding muzzle meant that a muzzle mount could not be installed.

Four different models have been added to the MP5K series, starting with the base MP5K itself. The MP5KA1 is finished with a smooth finish and smaller iron sights to prevent jamming when pulling the weapon out of the holster (like in a character submachine gun). The MP5KA4 gains a three-shot burst capability, while the MP5KA5 is similar to the MP5KA1 but has the same triple-shot burst capability as the MP5KA4. The MP5KA5 also lacks the shoulder stock of previous brands.

The MP5K and MP5KA4 are also equipped with open adjustable sights, while the MP5KA1 and MP5KA5 are equipped with fixed open sights.

The MP5K line was expanded in 1991 with the arrival of the MP5K-PDW ("Personal Defense Weapon"). This branding leads to greater versatility with the full size HK MP5A2 submachine gun. It features an optional folding stock made of synthetic material for a lightweight and durable look.

The personal defense weapon designation gives it the qualities of a fully automatic firearm and the compactness of a submachine gun, so it doesn't reduce firepower.

The SP89 is the civilian market variant of the HK MP5K, but limited to semi-automatic fire. This version also lacks the recognizable vertical fore grip, which is now replaced by a handguard.

The HK MP5 is revered as the "space broom" due to its high fire rate and compact size.
