H-S Precision HTR (Heavy tactical Rifle) History

The HTR (Heavy Tactical Rifle) is manufactured by American-based H-S Precision, Incorporated and is yet another sound entry into the crowded sniper rifle market as far as military/police forces of the world go. The weapon is well-respected by its operators and offers considerable accuracy-at-range. The complete system weighs a manageable 5 kilograms (dependent upon accessories fitted and length of barrel used) and features an overall length of 1,130mm (variable) with a barrel measuring 606mm long (again, variable).

The HTR is operated through manual management of the bolt-action lever which is set to the gun's right side near the trigger region. A heavily-fluted barrel comes standard in all HTR models. The cheekpiece is made adjustable to suit shooter comfort and the trigger can be customized for length-of-pull. The stock is of composite construction with aluminum used in the full-length bedding block. Sections of Picatinny rail are featured over the receiver and along its sides to allow the shooter to utilize additional tactical accessories than the usual sighting scope. A bipod is set under the forend and hinged to fold away when not in use.

The HTR is available in two chambered forms - .308 Winchester and .338 Lapua Magnum. The detachable box magazine typically hold 4 rounds while a 10-round capacity magazine has also been introduced. Magnum-based cartridges feed from a smaller 3-round magazine. Muzzle velocity of the outgoing round reaches up to 900 meters-per-second and effective firing ranges are out to 800 meters. Maximum range is as far out as 1,500 meters.

Beyond its circulation in the United States, the HTR has found a home in the Israeli Army inventory where it provides long-range services as a standard-issue sniper rifle (where it is known as "Barak"). The Israeli Army opted for an HTR with 28-inch long barrel and chambered for the .338 Lapua Magnum cartridge. To date, Israeli snipers have given the H-S Precision HTR system good marks under practical operational conditions.

Beyond its service in military and law enforcement circles, the HTR has also proven popular in competition shooting circuits.
