History
The Izhmash AN-94 is the latest in a series of Russian assault rifles that will replace the long-lived Kalashnikov line (including the fabled AK-47). Externally, the system retains some similarities to the Kalashnikov's design (including the curved magazine), but due to its "delayed" recoil 2-round burst operation that can fire a second round, it is Presented as a more accurate version of the Kalashnikov Rifle-74M was billed before the first round of action was fully completed. The AK-74M itself is an upgraded AK-74 with a synthetic folding stock, reinforced muzzle mount, dust cover and side rail optics mounts. While both the AK-74M and AN-94 use the 5.45x39mm M74 cartridge, the latter can also accommodate both a bayonet and GP-30 grenade launcher, and has a 60-round detachable magazine - a Kalashnikov design that can' Don't do it.
The AN-94 was accepted after weapons testing in the 1980s and the design performed very well.
The pneumatic AN-94 has a folding stock that reduces the length of the weapon by approximately 8 inches. The feeding system accepts 5.45x39mm cartridges in 30, 45 or 60 rounds detachable magazine cases. The specified effective range is 400 meters, and the maximum range is 700 meters.
Depending on the mode selected, the rate of fire is between 600 and 1,800 rounds per minute. The sights are fixed iron sights (the "peep" type bezel sight is retained at the rear), although it is logical that the gun would accept different scopes as needed.
Despite its advantages, the AN-94 was a complex and expensive weapon to manufacture - a complexity that also required more maintenance in the field. The AN-94 entered service in limited numbers in 1997, although the Kalashnikov AK-47 series - of which the AN-94 would be a successor - is still in large numbers, leading some to debate the future of the AN-94 marvel than standard Russian assault rifles.
