History of the M3 Carbine (American Carbine, .30 Caliber, M3)

The core of the M3 Carbine is nothing more than the shape of the M2 Carbine (detailed elsewhere on this page) with the upper part of its receiver modified to accommodate an infrared (IR) sight for remote intervention. In low light/ under night conditions.

As a result, the open iron sights of the earlier M1 and M2 brands are gone, but all other features of the weapon remain faithful to the original. Various infrared sights were developed during the operation of the M3, which were referred to simply as "M1", "M2" and "M3".

Again, engineers at GM's Outback division were tasked with getting more out of the M1/M2 carbine line, so design work began in 1940, leading to limited production in late 1944, early 1945. This, in turn, led to the new carbine being assigned the development designation "T3".

The earliest scope in the game became the M1 "Sniper Scope", known in development as the "T120". The effective range of the modified M2/T3 is now 200-300 yards (in low light conditions), mainly aided by the mounted telescopic sight.

Inland made 2,100 to 3,000 M3 carbines, but aside from a few thousand powerful semi-prototypes, the weapon series never existed, at least officially. The series had limited circulation at the end of World War II (1939-1945) and was actively used during the Battle of Okinawa, but had a larger release during the Korean War (1950-1953).

It was also used with special forces in the Vietnam War (1955-1975), but over time it was overtaken by more powerful Cold War era sniper solutions.
