History

In the 1990s, PT Pindad locally produced the licensed Belgian Fabrique Nationale FN FNC under the name "SS1". This eventually led to the improved and updated 2006 SS2 series. The SS3 has since been a "bull" version of the same assault rifle, which is currently in late development for use by the Indonesian Armed Forces.

The "SS4" is another product from PT Pindad, although intended to be used as a dedicated "battle rifle" to meet the needs of the Indonesian military and potential export applicants.

A battle rifle is a special classification of military firearms, distinct from the traditional "assault rifle". It is generally an automatic (self-loading) rifle system, but is designed to fire a full power caliber cartridge rather than the currently widely accepted assault rifle cartridge shape.

Battle rifles allow engagement of targets outside the range of traditional assault rifles, although this often makes them difficult to use, especially with full automatic fire. One of the best examples of this rifle is probably the Fabrique Nationale FN FAL in Belgium, which has been in service around the world since 1947.

SS4 will be equipped with 7.62x51mm NATO standard rifle cartridge. Like the previous SS1, SS2 and SS3 models, the SS4 will use the familiar pneumatic rotating bolt firing function. The weapon is fed from a detachable 15-round magazine and has an adjustable stock for improved ergonomic comfort.

Adjustable iron sights will be standard equipment, although optics will be used, expanding the SS4's tactical utility.

The name "SS4" comes from the term "Senapan Serbu 4" which means "Assault Rifle 4" and follows the naming convention used in earlier SS1, SS2 and SS3 series of firearms.
