The Remington Model 1875 Renewal follows the form and function of the successful Model 1858, which was widely used and accepted during the American Civil War. These weapons are also used worldwide in conflicts in Mexico and Europe. The Model 1875 retained the use of a belted upper frame for increased structural strength compared to competing open-frame Colt guns of the time.

Additionally, the line uses the same woven bottom barrel construction, completing the recognizable Remington "look". The original Model 1858 was designed for gunpowder and projectiles, and later for impact-fired paper bullets, while the Model 1875 was specifically designed for use with metal cartridges.

The Model 1875 was Remington's answer to the ever-popular Colt. The 45 single-action revolver (commonly known as the "Peacemaker"), represented Remington's first foray into the metal-cartridge revolver market.

The Model 1875 was intended for the US Army. The 45 Colt cartridge and other forms eventually led to the .44-40 Winchester and . 44 Remington cartridge lines.

The weapon is based on a single-action form that requires the operator to manually pull the hammer (the trigger is used to release the hammer) before firing. The weapon has a maximum attack range of up to 160 feet, although the closer the target is to the shooter, the more accurate it is. Iron sights provide some precision with a rear milled slot attached to the front insert.

As usual, the pistol was fed from a detachable six-round rotating drum.

This Remington product is a full two years late because the Colt Peacemaker has already won the favor of the U.S. government through an Army-related contract. Thus, during the manufacturing period from 1875 to 1889, the total production of the Model 1875 only reached about 25,000 to 30,000 pieces.

The Egyptian government ordered about 10,000 guns, but the order was hampered by outstanding debts, and the promised number was actually published very rarely.
