History
The Swiss-German SIG-Sauer SSG 3000, delivered in 1992, is a modern precision sniper system designed for military and law enforcement purposes. SIG-Sauer markets the instrument as a "High Performance Long Range Rifle", which is based on proven battle rifle elements to provide unmatched reliability and the precision required for range on the battlefield. The weapon is available in SSG 3000 18" Patrol and SSG 3000 24" Patrol models for . 308 WIN Metric 7. 62x51mm NATO cartridges (7.
62x51mm NATO).
The SSG 3000 uses an industry standard hand-rotating bolt design, where the operator manipulates the bolt handle to eject the spent case and insert new cartridges (from the magazine) into the firing chamber. The grip is offset to the right side of the case, which mainly benefits right-handers. However, the bolt uses six front locking lugs that interact directly with the barrel, eliminating any interaction with the actual receiver. The receiver (with an Integral Zero MOA M1913 rail section on newer models) is a one-piece unit, including the front end and shoulder rest (with an ergonomic pistol grip).
The height and length of the shoulder rest are fully adjustable to the user's preference. Harris branded adjustable bipods (optional, foldable) are also attached to the sloping front end. The barrel is of solid quality, hammer forged to the required tolerances while being covered by a slotted muzzle flash suppressor/muzzle brake (military models with silencer).
Feeding is a 5-round internal detachable magazine that provides limited repetitive firing action. Like other precision sniper weapons, the SSG 3000 does not have any sights. Instead, the gun is fitted with a standard Hensoldt 1.5-6x42 series scope, although the rail accessories partially support a wider range of other brands of scopes. Triggers are available in single- and dual-stage designs and are well protected on three sides - only a short ring span is used under the trigger itself.
Slings (Integral Ambi QD Sling Points) on the axle and front end allow the use of shoulder straps for transport/travel.
Overall length is 46.5" with a 23.5" rifled barrel (although this depends on the specific model - the 18" Patrol version is about 5" shorter overall than the standard 24" Patrol -Model). Curb weight is 12 lbs. Provisions The muzzle velocity is 2,625 feet per second.
To date (January 2014), the SSG 3000 has been adopted by forces in Brazil (Army), Chile (Army), Colombia (Police and Army), Czech Republic, Egypt (Special Forces) and India (Government Security) . , Norway (emergency response), Slovakia (special police), South Korea (marines), Thailand (army) and Turkey (special forces). Due to its intended function, it is highly regarded as an advanced and well-crafted weapon.
