History of Smith & Wesson M&P (Military and Police)

The M&P ("Military and Police") is a traditional semi-automatic pistol produced by Smith & Wesson in . 22LR, . 380 ACP, 9 x 19mm Parabellum, . 40 Black and White, . 357 SIG and . 45 ACP flavors. Launched in 2005, it has been adopted by various police and military security forces, while also proving popular for civilian personal defense. Finishes include black and dark earth, and barrel lengths range from 2.75" to 5". The magazine capacity varies from six to seventeen rounds due to the variable magazine provided.

All types of action in the range are consistent and feature a short recoil design and locking breech lugs. The sights also vary widely between each model in the series.

Like almost all semi-automatic pistols released today, M&P offers full-size to compact frame styles, depending on customer preference. Models in this range include the "Pro Series", "Mid-Size" and "Bodyguard 380".

Operators in the series range from the Afghan National Security Forces and Australian Police Force to the Royal Thai Army and several US Police and Park Forces.
